Nursery at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Battersea

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Indoor and outdoor classrooms get equal weight at Sacred Heart’s nursery, with space for energetic play and quieter exploration. This is the school’s own nursery class in Battersea, where children usually start shortly after turning three and attend for between three and five terms. Christian values shape the school’s aims for their early learning.

Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 20 and 21 June 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school.

The Nursery Day

Play and adult-guided learning share the day. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together language, physical development and social development with mathematics, literacy, expressive arts and understanding the world. In parent terms, learning involves communication, movement, relationships and creative exploration as well as early reading and number work. Children are encouraged to choose aspects of their learning and think about what they enjoy or want to try next.

Planning usually begins with the theme Ourselves in September, then responds to children’s interests and development. Staff review plans daily and use observations to decide the next steps. This gives children’s own interests a role in what happens next, rather than making the theme a fixed script.

Inside and outside, learning areas let children explore independently and reach materials themselves. Active spaces sit alongside quiet ones, giving different kinds of play room to happen. Adults also help children develop ideas through extended discussion, with time to practise skills alone or alongside others.

Care and Support

Every child has a key person, usually their class teacher, giving parents a clear contact. Preparation includes an individual conversation before starting, a Nursery Welcome meeting and stay and play days. Once children begin, staff are available for informal daily conversations; two formal parent meetings each year and an annual written report provide fuller opportunities to discuss progress. Parents’ observations contribute to assessment, so learning at home helps inform nursery planning.

Activities are adapted for children with special educational needs and those learning English as an additional language. Early years practitioners also exchange relevant information with other settings and work with health professionals and other agencies to help identify and meet needs.

Lunch has a firm rule: nursery children eat school dinners rather than bringing packed lunches. Harrison Catering Services provides the meals. Parents should return an allergen form to the office if their child develops a newly diagnosed allergy, making that information part of meal planning.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. For September 2027 entry, this involves applying through Wandsworth Council and returning the school’s Reception application pack with supporting evidence. Treat these as two required steps; completing the nursery application does not replace either of them.

Practical Information

Families can choose a morning, afternoon or full-time nursery pattern. Provision is for 15 or 30 hours a week, with eligibility applying to the funded 30-hour option. Part-time children can take one full day each week to complete their 15-hour entitlement, either from the academic year’s start or when parents feel their child is ready.

Nursery starts at 8:45am. The school day ends at 3:30pm, with different finishing times for part-time nursery pupils. Tell the school beforehand if another person will collect your child. Nursery applications require the completed admissions pack and supporting documents to be returned to the school. Admissions enquiries can be made on 07399391667, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Early years children wear a distinct uniform and do not need a PE kit. Send a book bag each day and a carrier bag containing spare clothing, with clothing clearly labelled. Meals are paid ahead of each half term; free meals require council approval of eligibility. Contact the school for current charges.
