Nursery at West Hill Primary School

A mud kitchen and a large early years playground give West Hill’s nursery a practical, outdoor focus within its primary school setting in Wandsworth. The nursery has a teacher and a teaching assistant listed specifically for its class. For families, that provides a clear starting point for understanding who supports children’s learning and care.
Outdoor space is a concrete part of the early years offer. The school’s SEND information document describes an EYFS playground with room for children to develop coordination and movement skills, alongside climbing equipment, a sensory garden and a mud kitchen. These features create possibilities for physical exploration and messy play, rather than confining learning to classroom tables.
Inside, the school has spacious classrooms and smaller learning hubs. These are school facilities, so they should be distinguished from the spaces assigned specifically to nursery children. The outdoor early years area is the more direct detail for parents weighing up the nursery day.
Ofsted’s February 2024 inspection found that children across the early years were prepared for subsequent learning. That finding covers the early years collectively; it is not a separate nursery judgement.
Starting arrangements include either a home visit or an induction meeting for new children, including those joining nursery. Early years practitioners and the SEND coordinator also contact a child’s previous setting wherever possible. This gives families an opportunity to discuss additional needs before the new routine begins, while staff can use existing knowledge of the child to plan support.
For a concern about learning or wellbeing, the class teacher is the first contact, with the SEND coordinator involved where appropriate. School support can draw on the Early Years inclusion team, speech and language therapists and educational psychologists. Parents participate in support planning, and individual Pupil Passports record targets and provision for children on the SEND register.
Communication includes consultations each term, supplemented by conversations, telephone calls and email according to the child’s needs. The school’s meal provision includes halal choices. Families arranging after-school care also have food included in Night Owls sessions, linking the care arrangement with the practical question of eating after the school day.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and confers no priority under West Hill’s admission arrangements. Families must make a separate application using the Common Application Form for the local authority where they live. Wandsworth Council is the school’s admission authority.
For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is past. The distinction matters when choosing nursery: familiarity with the school does not replace the separate Reception application.
Transition support has a different purpose. Teachers exchange information when children change year groups, including details of learning and additional needs. This helps continuity of support; it does not affect admission priority.
Nursery applications go directly to West Hill: families can email the completed form to info@westhill.wandsworth.sch.uk or collect a paper copy from the school. A school tour can be requested through the online booking form.
Wraparound care includes Early Birds, supported by Magic Breakfast, from 7.30am. Night Owls After School Care runs from 3.15pm until 5.30pm, with activities and food included. The school brochure explicitly extends wraparound provision to nursery children. Night Owls is charged; refer to the school for current charges.
No. Nursery attendance gives neither automatic transfer nor priority under the school’s admission arrangements. A separate Reception application is required.
Email the completed nursery application form to info@westhill.wandsworth.sch.uk, or collect a paper form from the school.
Yes. The school brochure includes nursery children in its wraparound offer. Early Birds starts at 7.30am, and Night Owls runs from 3.15pm to 5.30pm.
New children have a home visit or induction meeting. Where possible, early years staff also liaise with the previous setting to help plan provision.
Speak to the class teacher first. A meeting with the SEND coordinator can follow where appropriate, and the school can seek specialist advice according to the child’s needs.
