Conversation starts early at Little Owls: talk between nursery children and their teachers forms part of the day from the outset. This is Hope Brook CofE Primary School’s pre-school provision in Longhope, with learning based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). For parents, that places the emphasis on early development, with communication woven into daily learning.
The wider school has a Church of England character. Hope Brook aims to help children become curious, independent learners, alongside its Christian values.
Termly topics organise the pre-school’s EYFS learning. In practical terms, these connect the early-years curriculum with a subject children can explore over time. Hope Brook aims to build new learning on children’s existing knowledge and skills, giving those topics a developmental purpose.
Talking with adults is a concrete part of nursery learning. Children exchange ideas with teachers, while the school’s language approach links conversation and stories with developing speech. The emphasis is on giving children words to express themselves. That makes communication part of the activity itself.
Outdoor learning extends the school’s approach beyond classroom work. Younger children have weekly experiences including village walks that follow the seasons and art made with natural materials. Across the school, outdoor activities also include den building and cooking using a fire pit. Hope Brook intends these experiences to develop cooperation, creativity and decisions about risk; those are useful aims for parents who value learning through practical exploration.
The timetable places pre-school lunch at 12.00, followed by afternoon learning at 13.00. Lunch therefore provides a clear break between the two parts of the learning day.
Additional support has a school-wide point of contact through the special educational needs and disability coordinator (SENDCo). The role oversees extra provision, whether a child needs help for a single term or over a longer period. Parents can contact the SENDCo at send@hopebrook.gloucs.sch.uk to discuss their child’s support.
Families can also raise wellbeing concerns with their child’s class teacher or the school’s Family Support Worker and Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA). Hope Brook says it will discuss concerns with parents so that home and school can work together.
School meals are prepared on site by Caterlink. The wider school’s lunch arrangements include a packed-lunch alternative, drinking water at the tables and an allergy or intolerance form. These give families practical ways to communicate dietary needs.
Attending Little Owls does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Gloucestershire local authority is Hope Brook’s admissions authority, and the Reception application route is through Gloucestershire County Council.
Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions. Participation in the nursery’s daily learning should not be mistaken for a secured school place.
