Stories, songs and the security of familiar routines give Oak View’s early years provision its clearest character. This nursery belongs to Oak View School in Loughton, a special school whose wider age range is 3 to 19. Families should understand that specialist context when considering their child’s first experience of school.
Ofsted graded the early years provision Good at the inspection on 23 and 24 November 2022. At that time, every pupil at the school had an education, health and care (EHC) plan; many had severe learning difficulties, while some had profound and multiple learning difficulties. These are school-wide characteristics, rather than a description of an individual nursery child.
Reading aloud and singing were concrete features of early learning in November 2022. Teachers brought enthusiasm to both, encouraging children to take an interest in books, explore how to handle them and follow the unfolding story. For a parent, that gives a useful picture of learning through shared language and enjoyment, with books becoming objects children want to engage with themselves.
Communication development also extended from early years onwards: children grew more confident and became surer communicators. That makes the combination of songs, stories and participation especially relevant to families considering this specialist setting. The emphasis was on children becoming more able to express themselves as well as taking part in learning.
Routines gave the day another organising thread. Children began learning these from early years, with a structured approach helping them feel secure. Familiar sequences therefore had a learning purpose as well as a practical one: they supported children in understanding expectations and developing their behaviour over time.
Predictability was a meaningful part of support in November 2022. Learning routines helped children build security, while the same early-years discussion described staff recognising signals that additional help might be needed. A sensory break was one example. Pupils often resumed learning promptly after that support, illustrating how a pause could help them participate again.
Attention during learning. The inspection also identified occasions when staff took too long to recognise that pupils had lost concentration. Some consequently remained disengaged longer than they should. For families, the relevant consideration is how promptly adults notice a child’s changing attention and help them rejoin an activity. This qualification matters alongside the positive account of routines and sensory support.
