Taking turns, listening to other children and learning to persevere give Bushmead’s early years a clear social character. The nursery belongs to Bushmead Primary & Nursery School on Bushmead Road in Luton, so families have access to a school support structure as well as the nursery itself.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 24 and 25 May 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Learning starts with a curriculum that considers what children need to understand and connects new learning with what has come before. For parents, this means early education has a planned direction, alongside the everyday business of learning to be part of a group.
In May 2023, early years children were learning to listen, wait for a turn and use equipment considerately. Clear routines and expectations begin in early years, giving children practice in sharing space and activities with others. Resilience and perseverance also feature from this stage. These are practical habits for tackling something difficult and trying again, rather than simply completing a task.
Support for additional needs sits within the school’s Inclusion Team. Families can raise a learning concern with the class teacher first, then contact the inclusion team for further help. A team of key workers supports children who need individual assistance. This is targeted support, rather than evidence of a nursery key-person arrangement for every child.
Foundation-stage assessments and concerns raised by parents help identify needs. Depending on the child, support can include work on speech and language, help with friendships, or individual pastoral assistance. Picture-based communication is used for children with communication or language difficulties, giving them another way to understand and express themselves.
Parents are involved in reviewing support. Provision plans are reviewed three times a year, with a summer online meeting preparing for transition. The school also has three accessible toilets, including one with a shower, a concrete consideration for families discussing physical care needs.
The Family Team helps with concerns including toileting, sleep and behaviour, and can support families with referrals and paperwork. Contact is through familyworkers@bushmeadprimaryschool.co.uk. This gives parents a separate route for family difficulties that may affect their child’s nursery experience.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a separate decision from choosing nursery.
For a child with an EHC Plan, the local authority responsible for the plan contacts the school in advance so that transition can be prepared. This concerns planning support, rather than a nursery attendance advantage.
Wraparound care. Nursery pupils have had no wraparound care from 1 September 2026. Families needing childcare beyond the nursery session must account for that when organising their working day.
Registration uses a nursery registration form, with a response at allocation time. Nursery enquiries can go to nursery@bushmeadprimaryschool.co.uk. Funding eligibility can be checked through Childcare Choices or the government’s working-parent childcare service.
The school office can be contacted on 01582 725387 or office@bushmeadprimaryschool.co.uk. Its term-time opening hours are 8.30am to 4.30pm. For driving directions to the main gate, use LU2 7YT in a satnav; the school’s postal postcode is LU2 7EU.
