Nursery at Leagrave Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

A sensory room, open play spaces and outdoor learning areas give Leagrave’s nursery its own character within the primary school. Children aged between 3 and 4 are welcomed into provision on Strangers Way in Luton, with a purpose-built Nursery and Early Years Unit and a recently expanded nursery space. The extension adds space for play and exploration.

Play shapes the approach. The nursery describes a balance between adult-directed learning and creative play, allowing children to develop social and early academic skills at their own pace.

The Nursery Day

Morning and afternoon sessions give the day its basic shape. Within them, active play sits alongside planned learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines attention to each child’s development with relationships and surroundings that support learning. For parents, that means learning through interaction and exploration as well as activities led by adults.

There is concrete detail behind that approach. Early-years art includes making diva lamps from clay and turning discarded materials into models. Construction equipment and junk modelling are used outside as well as indoors, encouraging children to build with a purpose and think about whether their ideas work. Singing, dancing and inventing music add other ways to express themselves. Mathematics develops through practical games, conversation and exploration, giving numbers a place in play.

Technology also has a role in early years: children draw and move objects on interactive whiteboards, give commands to Beebots and use iPads for educational apps and photography. These are opportunities to make things happen and see the result.

In October 2024, Ofsted identified a nursery environment rich in language, with children able to explore different texts. That places conversation and books alongside the practical activities, supporting the vocabulary children need to explain their ideas.

Care and Support

The nursery describes its staff as highly qualified and aims to make children feel listened to and valued. Emotional development has a practical place in early years: in October 2024, adults demonstrated behaviours through activities that helped children recognise and communicate feelings.

Food arrangements offer choices around the session day. Nursery breakfast club includes breakfast; lunchtime supervision can accompany either a parent-provided packed lunch or a school dinner. After-school care has options with or without a snack, so families can choose the arrangement that suits their child.

For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school places children’s needs at the centre of decisions. Parents can contact the school office to discuss support. Class queries can be addressed through an appointment with the child’s teacher, giving families a direct route to a conversation.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process; choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself.

For entry in September 2026, parents had to complete Luton Council’s common application form by 15 January 2026. That deadline is now past. Applications arriving after the deadline were excluded from the first allocation except in very exceptional circumstances. Treat the nursery application and the Reception application as separate tasks, with the relevant Reception deadline kept firmly in view.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:30am to 11:30am, while the afternoon runs from 12:00pm to 3:00pm. Nursery breakfast club covers 8:00am to 8:30am, and after-school club runs from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Those additions can extend care around the teaching sessions. Breakfast and after-school places must be reserved and paid for ahead of time through Scopay.

Eligible families may be able to access 30 hours of free childcare. Additional nursery sessions and lunch carry charges; contact the school for current charges before choosing a pattern.

Nursery applications can be downloaded and emailed or printed and delivered to the school office. Admissions enquiries go to 01582 509 531. Families can arrange a school visit through the office, and nursery Peek ‘n’ Play sessions let parents attend with their child, meet the team and explore the classrooms before applying.
