Nursery rhymes, new vocabulary and creative materials give Stopsley’s nursery its clearest character: an introduction to learning through language and making. This is the school’s own provision for children aged three to four, on Hitchin Road in Luton. It sits within a school with a historic building and grounds, rather than operating as a separate childcare setting.
In March 2023, Ofsted found that support and care were strong from early years onwards, with children responding to ambitious expectations. Those findings concern early years within the school; they are not a separate nursery grade.
Language has a clear place in the learning. In March 2023, vocabulary development began in Nursery, younger children enjoyed rhymes, and adults demonstrated expressive, carefully chosen language. For a parent, the useful detail is the combination: children hear language from adults and practise it through familiar songs and rhymes.
Supersonic Phonics Friends is the school’s named approach to teaching sounds. Daily phonics teaching extends through early years, with interactive sessions and activities that can take place outside as well as indoors. Phonics means learning how sounds combine into words and how words can be separated into sounds for spelling.
Creative work starts in Nursery too. Children use different materials to express ideas through art. Design and technology introduces building, working with fabric and exploring ingredients, giving children practical ways to investigate how things work. These are concrete strands of the day: speaking, listening, experimenting and making, alongside the early work on sounds.
Communication uses Arbor, which carries school emails and allows parents to arrange appointments for parents’ evenings. The school sets up accounts when children join; families activate them and keep their contact details current. That gives parents a regular channel for messages and meeting arrangements.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities, support is tailored to their needs. Parents are involved when additional assessment or help is first considered, and receive an Individual Education Plan whenever it is reviewed. The plan sets out targets, while additional meetings allow families and staff to discuss what is working and what needs adjusting.
SEND coffee mornings are planned each half-term, led by the SENDCO team with Family Worker support. They offer another opportunity to ask questions and meet other parents; occasional visiting organisations explain their services. Families can also contact the SEND team directly at sendco@stopsley.primaryluton.co.uk.
Children under five receive milk free of charge. This applies to the nursery’s stated age group and provides one concrete care routine within the school’s arrangements.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the Admissions team at Luton Borough Council. Treat that application as a distinct step when planning your child’s move into school.
For joining enquiries, email admissions@stopsley.primaryluton.co.uk or telephone 01582 611035. General enquiries go to schooloffice@stopsley.primaryluton.co.uk. The school welcomes visits, giving families a way to meet the team before choosing the provision.
Wraparound care. FLAG club’s eligibility runs from Reception to Year 6. Nursery children therefore fall outside that club’s stated age groups, an important distinction for families planning childcare around work.
