Talking and storytelling give Waulud’s early learning a clear starting point. Development Matters guides preparation for writing in the early years, while the school’s Primary Writing Project emphasises spoken language and storytelling in writing development. For parents, that means looking beyond pencil skills to how children learn to express an idea.
This is the nursery within Waulud Primary School on Wauluds Bank Drive in Luton. The school admits children from age three. Its shared values, expressed through the Waulud Way, encourage children to respect others, include one another and keep trying when learning becomes challenging.
Early writing sits within the early years foundation stage (EYFS), with Development Matters providing the curriculum guidance used here. The school follows Talk for Writing and uses Primary Writing Project principles across its provision. Conversation, vocabulary and storytelling therefore have a defined place in the approach: children’s spoken expression matters alongside their developing writing.
In March 2023, children were learning to recognise sounds and join them into words from the early years. Reading materials matched children’s phonics stage. This connects the resources children use with the sounds they are learning, rather than treating early reading as a race through books.
Curriculum continuity. The March 2023 inspection identified uneven planning between early years and Year 1 in a few subjects. Teachers needed clearer sequences of vocabulary, ideas and skills beginning in Nursery. For families, the relevant concern is how learning builds from these first experiences into later teaching.
Family support has a physical base: the Family Room sits beside the Reception classrooms. Family workers offer advice and support, and can be reached during the day on the school telephone number, using option 2. This gives parents a contact point for concerns that extend beyond classroom learning.
For SEND enquiries, the office arranges a meeting with the Inclusion Manager. Parents can use that route to discuss their child’s needs directly with the team responsible for inclusion.
School meals are cooked on site, with vegetarian and meat choices each day. The kitchen team can discuss children’s dietary requirements, and menu information identifies key allergies and alternatives where offered. These are school catering arrangements; families considering lunchtime attendance have a practical route for discussing food requirements.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal Luton admissions route by the applicable deadline.
Nursery attendance gives no priority under the school’s admission criteria. Those criteria consider children in care, siblings, catchment residence, medical grounds and distance. Familiarity with the school should therefore be treated separately from entitlement to a place.
Nursery finishes at 3:30pm, including Fridays. That Friday finish matters for collection planning because the nursery keeps its later finish when other year groups end earlier.
General enquiries go to the school office on 01582 593469 or admin@wauludprimary.co.uk. Visits can be arranged by contacting the school. The school uniform combines a yellow polo shirt with a blue sweatshirt or cardigan, grey bottoms and black shoes. Clothing should be labelled, and families must keep emergency telephone details up to date with the office or class teacher.
