Nursery at Clifton Primary School

Language starts early at Clifton: the nursery takes children from age two, and structured conversation is part of its early-years approach. Nursery and pre-school sit within Clifton Primary School in Ansdell, giving the youngest children their own starting point within a primary school setting.
The school aims for ambitious learning from the outset, with vocabulary receiving deliberate attention. For parents, the distinctive emphasis is on helping children express ideas, rather than treating new words as an incidental part of the day.
The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework for children's early learning and development. Clifton combines this with an emphasis on conversation and vocabulary: adults structure talk to help children develop the language they need for learning. That makes communication a central part of the approach from age two.
Books have a named place in this progression. The Clifton Reading Journey begins in Nursery, with a Reading Bookshelf for each year group. There are separate collections for the two-year-old nursery and pre-school, so these youngest groups have their own selection of texts within the school's reading programme. The school aims to develop understanding and vocabulary through a sequence that begins with its nursery children.
At the inspection on 17 and 18 July 2024, Ofsted found that early-years children were enthusiastic, explained their learning accurately and benefited from effective exchanges with adults. These findings concern the early years as a whole. The same inspection identified a school-wide weakness: some misunderstandings were left unresolved too long, allowing pupils to tackle further content before they were ready.
A Preschool and Nursery Manager forms part of the staffing structure, alongside an Early Years Foundation Stage Lead. The preschool also has a designated safeguarding lead. These roles give early education and safeguarding identifiable responsibilities within the team.
For additional needs, the school aims to work with families and professionals. Its Butterfly SEND Hub provides a separate specialist provision covering EYFS and Key Stage 1 for children with autism and/or speech, language and communication needs. Admission involves consultation with the local authority; it should be understood as a distinct arrangement. The Hub's support team includes a play therapist, speech and language expertise and educational psychology.
School meals are prepared in the school's kitchen, with three choices each day: usually a meat option, a vegetable-based option and jacket potatoes with fillings. Allergies can be accommodated following discussion with staff. This is the school's meal arrangement, rather than a separate nursery menu.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Choosing this nursery and applying for school are separate decisions.
Prospective families can book a visit to meet staff and explore the learning spaces. Personalised school tours take place during the school day and include an opportunity to discuss the individual child. Contact 01253 727664 or bursar@clifton-pri.lancs.sch.uk to arrange a visit.
