At a Glance

Children’s own ideas have room to develop here, alongside teaching that helps them put those ideas into words. Abbotsford’s school nursery, also called Pre-School, sits within its independent preparatory school in Urmston. The August 2025 admissions policy places Pre School at the start of provision for children aged three upwards.

The ISI inspection of 24 to 26 June 2025 covered one Nursery class within the school’s early years, while the separately registered Little Gems provision was excluded. That distinction matters: the early years findings used here concern the school provision, rather than its separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the learning framework. Its seven areas organise children’s learning and development; here, adults combine activities children choose themselves with teaching they lead. In June 2025, early years staff adapted activities to children’s developmental stages and helped them progress from their individual starting points. Children therefore have both space to explore and adult guidance to extend their learning.

Language receives close attention. Adults introduce vocabulary, invite children to explain their thinking and help them express ideas more fully. This makes conversation part of learning, rather than simply instructions before an activity. Topic work also introduces children to other cultures and the wider world.

Pre-School’s past activities give that approach some colour. In November 2019, Jungle Book stories prompted comparisons between British woodland and rainforest habitats. Children explored rainforest layers, tasted Indian food while celebrating Diwali, and made necklaces from leaves during Woodland Play. The activities connected stories with nature, making and food.

A January 2020 example took learning into the woods: children constructed shelters for toys while considering protection from the sun. These are dated examples, rather than a promised timetable, but they show how an idea can become a practical task outdoors.

Care and Support

Emotional development is part of the early years day. In June 2025, children received help to understand their feelings and manage their responses, with consistent behaviour expectations. Adults also supported sharing, taking turns and kindness during play. These small exchanges give children practice in joining activities and considering other people.

The staff list includes a Pre-school teaching role linked with phonics and an Infant SENco, alongside learning support teachers. The inclusion policy applies to EYFS and allows adapted materials, additional time and specialist seating where appropriate. Support therefore needs to fit the individual child. Early years staff had paediatric first aid training at the June 2025 inspection.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Reception is a distinct entry point in the August 2025 admissions policy, so families should treat admission to that stage as a separate decision from choosing Pre-School.

Learning progression is a different matter. In June 2025, early years children were gradually introduced to more formal ways of learning. This describes preparation for the next stage; it does not establish an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

For enquiries, contact the school office on 0161 748 3261 or secretary@abbotsfordprepschool.co.uk. The website also has a Request a visit option.

Charges. The school’s terms include optional food charges within their definition of charges. Families should consult the school for current charges. Keep that financial question separate from the food-tasting activities described above: tasting Indian food during a topic does not establish the everyday meal arrangement.

FAQs

No. It concerns the school’s Nursery or Pre-School provision. Little Gems was separately registered and excluded from the June 2025 ISI inspection.

The August 2025 admissions policy describes school provision starting at age three, with Pre School as its first stage.

Early years teaching combines children’s own activities with adult guidance. Staff develop vocabulary and encourage children to explain their ideas.
