Nursery at St Luke's CofE Primary School

At a Glance

A purpose-built nursery, a qualified teacher and room for 32 children per session give St Luke's nursery its defining shape. This is the school's own provision for three- and four-year-olds, with an Early Years team supporting the teacher. The nursery belongs to the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), so its organisation connects teaching with children's early development.

Funded places follow a term-time pattern, with either 15 or 30 hours. For families, that makes the choice between a shorter session and a day that includes lunch a practical part of choosing the nursery.

The Nursery Day

Adult teaching and children's choices both have a place in the day. Teacher-led sessions introduce learning, while free flow gives children opportunities to select activities in the classroom. A role play area and book corner sit alongside construction activities, creative materials and opportunities to practise early writing, phonics, maths and fine motor skills. Children can return to skills introduced by adults through their own play.

Indoor and outdoor learning takes place throughout the year. The classroom's activities change daily, and adults also work with small groups to spot misunderstandings and develop children's learning. This combines time to explore with direct adult involvement.

The EYFS brings together seven areas of development. Language, physical skills and personal and social development sit alongside early literacy, maths, understanding the world and creative expression. In parent terms, learning to communicate and get along with others matters alongside learning about numbers and writing. The school aims to develop these skills through play and practical experiences, with language a priority.

In July 2023, Ofsted found that early years learning gave children a secure foundation for later education. A concrete example was paint mixing: early years children explored techniques for making colours from primary paints, connecting creative experimentation with learning how materials work.

Care and Support

Each child has a key worker, providing a particular adult to turn to with worries and someone responsible for watching their personal and social wellbeing. Photographs and observations contribute to a Learning Journey Book. Children help select their work, families can contribute work from home, and the books are available at parents' evenings. That gives parents a concrete way to see what their child has been doing.

For children with additional needs, the school's SEND arrangements include discussions with families before or when a child joins. Parents of children on the SEND register are invited to three review meetings a year, giving them recurring opportunities to discuss support and changing needs.

Lunch is part of the 30-hour funded pattern. Families choosing a school hot meal pay for it; a packed lunch from home carries no additional charge. The lunch hour itself is included in the entitlement.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority for September 2027 entry. A fresh application is required, through the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead admissions team, by 15 January 2027 for the 2027–2028 academic year. Families should treat this as a separate application, even when their child already attends the nursery.

Practical Information

The 15-hour option is either mornings, 08:30–11:30, or afternoons, 12:30–15:30. Families indicate their preference when applying, but the preferred session is not guaranteed. The 30-hour pattern runs Monday to Friday, 08:30–14:30; eligibility must be demonstrated before starting and reconfirmed as required.

Additional paid sessions can be requested by families using the 15-hour entitlement. They need advance agreement, depend on availability and are reviewed each term against staffing, capacity and demand for funded places. Buying extras is optional and is not a condition of accessing funded hours. Ask the school for current charges. Nursery applications use the online Nursery Application Form.
