At a Glance

Caring for chickens and gathering their eggs gives nursery children at St Helens Montessori School a practical role in school life. Independence starts with something real to do. This is Montessori provision for children aged two to five, with a maximum child-to-teacher ratio of 6:1.

Two spacious classrooms and a kitchen children can use form the nursery's indoor base. The wider school occupies a converted coach house with five acres of grounds in East Farleigh. Those spaces give this nursery its distinctive combination of classroom materials and contact with the natural world.

Ofsted graded early years provision Outstanding at the inspection of 23 to 25 April 2024. That is the early years judgement within the school inspection.

The Nursery Day

Choice shapes the learning here. Children select activities, while the Montessori materials introduce ideas through things they can handle before moving towards abstract understanding. The nursery organises this work around Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics and Cultural learning. These cover caring for themselves and their surroundings, exploring through the senses, communication, number, and understanding the world.

This gives everyday tasks an educational purpose. The nursery uses Practical Life activities to encourage responsibility; number materials make quantities and patterns tangible. Language work brings speaking and listening together with writing and reading, while Cultural activities introduce science alongside history and geography. Additional lessons include French and music, with sports, Judo and forest school adding movement and outdoor activity.

In April 2024, nursery children showed sustained attention and a strong commitment to learning. Staff taught them how to work independently. Early years reading work introduced letter sounds when children were ready, alongside activities developing the coordination and strength needed for handwriting. The emphasis was on preparing both the mind and the hand.

Nature also supplies work to do. Early years children grew and tended plants indoors and outside, making care for living things part of their learning rather than simply a backdrop to play.

Care and Support

Every nursery teacher has Montessori training in early years and/or primary education. Teachers also attend professional development courses, sessions and conferences. For families choosing this approach, that training matters: the materials and children's independent choices are central to how the nursery works.

Care for oneself, other people and the environment is an explicit part of Practical Life learning. It connects independence with responsibility, so learning to manage a task also means considering its effect on others.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application for Reception through the applicable admissions route and by its deadline. Treat that application as a distinct decision from choosing the nursery.

Practical Information

The nursery offers the Universal Early Years Entitlement to eligible children from age two. Eligibility remains part of that offer; families should refer to the school for current charges.

Enquiries can be made by telephone on 01622 721731 or by email at office@sthelensmontessori.co.uk. The nursery is at Lower Road, East Farleigh, Maidstone, ME15 0JT.
