At the February 2025 inspection, Sutton Valence School’s nursery was organised into two age-based areas within the Prep School. Children can join from two, and there were 55 nursery children at the February 2025 inspection. That is an attendance figure for that visit, rather than a measure of available places.
The nursery shares the Prep School site on Church Road, Chart Sutton, Kent ME17 3RF. For families considering Sutton Valence, this is the relevant location for the nursery day, separate from the senior school site.
Water, sand and imaginative play give early learning a practical shape. In February 2025, early years children used outdoor spaces for exploration and PE, alongside drawing, painting and activities using digital platforms. Learning involved movement and making things as well as language. The outdoor environment was used regularly, giving children opportunities to practise physical skills and play together.
Language receives deliberate attention. Across the early years, adults judged when to ask questions and when to give children thinking time; children communicated confidently as a result. This matters for a young child who needs space to form an answer rather than respond immediately. These findings cover the school’s early years provision, so they should be read in that wider context.
Social learning also happens through ordinary activities. Staff encouraged children to help one another with sand and water play, while throwing and catching activities involved sharing equipment and taking turns. Buying and selling during pretend play introduced ideas about money. Together, these examples show how learning about communication, relationships and practical tasks connects with play.
Regular contact with families supported early years care in February 2025. Staff and parents spoke at both ends of the school day, helping concerns receive a quick response. Leaders also met regularly with teachers, giving the early years team continuing support with its work.
Care routines included securely stored medicines and appropriate administration. Adults visiting the early years were reminded to keep mobile phones out of use. Staff working with these young children held suitable paediatric first aid qualifications, an important practical safeguard for this age group.
A taster day is offered to each prospective nursery child. It gives the child an introductory experience and the family a chance to judge the fit before joining. Nursery entry is non-selective.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask the Prep Admissions Office what application steps are required for a child already attending the nursery.
Reception entry is non-selective, but a taster day comes before a formal place offer. Registration alone is also conditional on meeting the school’s entry requirements. Families should distinguish becoming familiar with the school from receiving an offer.
For enquiries, contact the Prep Admissions Office on 01622 842117. Families are encouraged to visit before registering; registration involves a form, a copy of the child’s birth certificate and a non-refundable registration charge. Refer to the school for current charges.
