Four stories at school, a fifth at bedtime, and outdoor play in every weather: books and physical exploration give Beech Street's nursery its character. The nursery belongs to the primary school in Winton, Eccles. Its early years provision combines activities guided by adults with play chosen by children, giving both conversation and independent exploration a place in learning.
The 5-a-Day Reading Promise makes families part of that pattern. Songs, poems and nursery rhymes sit alongside books, with a family member taking responsibility for the bedtime story. Reading continues beyond the classroom.
The Early Years Foundation Stage shapes the curriculum. Here, that means developing language, movement, thinking and relationships through play as well as teaching. Topics bring together stories, classroom activities, visitors and trips, rather than treating each area of learning as a separate lesson.
Owl Babies and Kipper’s Toy box are named nursery texts. Children also explore puppets and books in the school library. The Welcomm programme supports communication, while White Rose provides the framework for early mathematics through exploration and direct teaching. These give adults specific ways to build vocabulary and introduce mathematical ideas.
Nursery phonics concentrates on the foundations: listening carefully, joining in action rhymes, sharing poetry and practising oral blending. The Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised approach provides the wider reading framework. For nursery children, the emphasis is on hearing and working with sounds, preparing them for the next stage of learning to read.
Outside, a bike track, an outdoor kitchen and a giant sandpit make physical and sensory exploration concrete. Children use the outdoor environment whatever the weather. This gives movement a regular place alongside language and early mathematics.
At the December 2022 inspection, Ofsted found that early years activities developed speaking, listening and early mathematics, alongside learning to take turns and follow routines. Those are practical foundations for joining group activities and managing a classroom day.
For the September 2026 intake, starting arrangements included a welcome meeting, two classroom stay-and-play sessions with a parent or carer, and a home visit. Staff also planned contact with the child's existing setting where relevant. That sequence introduced the adults and classroom while allowing staff to get to know children in familiar surroundings.
Class Dojo carries half-term learning newsletters, photographs and videos from early years activities. Parents can see what children are exploring and use those updates to start conversations at home.
SEND support includes discussion with the class teacher and SEN coordinator, followed where needed by individual or group help, different materials and additional adult support. Parents' permission is sought before external services receive children's records. Ofsted's December 2022 findings included prompt identification of SEND in early years and provision of staff training and information to support those children.
A separate application matters. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority. The admission arrangements put children who attended the nursery on the same footing as children who did not.
Families must apply separately for Reception through Salford's local authority school admissions route. Where applications exceed places, the admission criteria determine allocation. Familiarity with the school and preparation for further learning should therefore be considered separately from securing a place.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 0161 9211606 or email schoolinfo@beechstreetprimary.co.uk. Prospective families are invited to visit, giving parents a direct opportunity to see the setting.
Pre-loved school uniform can be obtained through the office, including trousers, jumpers and shoes. This provides a practical option for families assembling school clothing.
