Songs, stories and learning to keep trying give Bowlee Park’s nursery its character. Language development sits alongside the everyday social skills children need to learn together. The provision belongs to Bowlee Park Community Primary School on Windermere Road, with two pre-school classes organised within Unit One.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 15 and 16 November 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Early language is a clear priority. In November 2023, children’s learning included rhymes, songs and stories, giving them different ways to hear and use language. Adults helped children recognise letters and become aware of sounds, preparing them for phonics. For parents, the useful distinction is that this preparation starts with listening and language: children build the foundations needed for learning to read.
Learning habits receive attention from the beginning of the Nursery Year. Children practise waiting for a turn, listening to others and continuing when something proves difficult. These are practical skills for taking part in a group and tackling unfamiliar activities. Persistence matters alongside early knowledge.
The early years curriculum also had precise expectations about what children should learn and when in November 2023. This gives the language work and social learning a deliberate direction. The emphasis is on building foundations in an organised sequence, with adults clear about the learning they are supporting.
Support for special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) begins in the Nursery Year. In November 2023, staff identified needs through communication with families and professionals, enabling children to receive help early. Parents are part of that process. For a family whose child needs additional support, the practical value is the connection between discussing concerns and arranging help at the start of school life.
Both pre-school classes have a teacher and teaching assistant support. That places teaching and classroom assistance within the nursery team. Alongside the early identification of SEND, the emphasis on listening, turn-taking and persistence gives care a clear connection to children’s participation in learning.
Reception requires another application. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through their home local authority and meet the normal Reception application deadline. This remains a separate decision from choosing the nursery.
Applications for primary school places can be made online from the middle of September. Rochdale residents apply through Rochdale; families living in another borough apply through their own local authority, including when seeking a place at Bowlee Park.
