At a Glance

Butterflies introduce symmetry, woodland activities build coordination, and play gives children reasons to talk together. Branwood’s nursery combines early reading and mathematics with practical exploration. These are concrete features of the early years provision assessed by ISI on 17 to 19 June 2025.

Children join Branwood from age three. The nursery belongs to the independent school’s early years section, which covers ages three to five. At the June 2025 visit, this section comprised a nursery class and a Reception class; its combined roll of 37 children should not be read as the nursery’s capacity.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and development together: here, children practise communication through play, explore mathematical ideas through natural objects and develop physical skills outdoors. In June 2025, early years teaching supported secure beginnings in reading, with children learning how letters connect to sounds. Adults shaped activities around children’s interests and used questions to extend their thinking. Conversation was part of learning, rather than something reserved for formal lessons.

Butterflies provided a practical starting point for understanding symmetry and its vocabulary. Role play also introduced buying and selling, followed by visits to local shops. These activities connect abstract ideas to things young children can recognise and do.

Spanish begins in Kindergarten 1 with a specialist language teacher, using crafts, songs and movement. Music lessons take place weekly from KG1, with singing, listening and classroom instruments. Children therefore encounter language and creative activity alongside early literacy and number work.

Outdoor learning has substance. In June 2025, woodland studies supported sensory exploration and both small and larger movements, while specialist sports coaching developed balance, agility and strength. Shared school facilities include two astro turf pitches, an indoor sports hall and a playground with sports markings. These are school facilities, rather than a description of a separate nursery garden.

Care and Support

A September 2024 account of KG1’s settling-in week describes children meeting classmates, becoming familiar with routines and exploring their surroundings. Some also tried Spanish, music, IT and PE. The introduction covered both people and the activities they would encounter as school life became familiar.

By June 2025, nursery children were practising patience, taking turns and managing impulses. Staff helped children handle feelings and respond considerately to others, giving social development a practical place in the day. Early years staffing ratios were appropriate, staff had paediatric first-aid training, and the safeguarding team included trained early years colleagues.

For children with additional needs, the curriculum approach includes planning around barriers to learning; English language support is built into lesson planning. Snacks, fruit and drinks at break are included in fees. A May 2024 KG1 lunch event also brought parents into school to eat with their children, offering families a shared experience of lunchtime.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Confirm Reception application requirements, the route and any deadline directly with Branwood. Familiarity with school routines should not be confused with an admission entitlement.

Practical Information

Morning Club provides supervision from 8:00am and is included in fees when required. That gives families an earlier supervised start. Personal tours can be booked through the school’s tour page.

Early years funding is subject to eligibility and conditions. Use the linked eligibility checker and contact bursar@branwoodschool.co.uk for funding details and current charges.

Uniform is compulsory, with Whittaker’s as the school outfitter. Branwood bags are also required and bought through the school office. A second-hand clothing service provides another purchasing option; contact office@branwoodschool.co.uk for details.
