Woodland learning and specialist teaching give Bridgewater’s Kindergarten a day that reaches beyond its own classroom. This is the nursery within the independent school’s Prep Department, with purpose-built classrooms and play spaces designed for younger children. Children can join around their third birthday, before the usual move to Reception the September after they turn four by the end of August.
At the September 2025 ISI inspection, the early years provision included one nursery class. That gives the provision a clear classroom identity within the larger school, rather than a separate nursery setting.
Play, exploration and children’s interests shape the learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together early communication, physical development, relationships and the beginnings of reading, writing and number work. Activities are adapted to each child’s pace, so a shared topic can provide different starting points for different children.
Specialist teaching adds music, computing, PE and Forest School to that foundation. Environmental walks in neighbouring woodland take learning outdoors, while trips include animal parks, theatre visits and journeys on steam trains. These give children experiences to talk about and explore alongside classroom activities.
The September 2025 ISI inspection found that early years teaching developed language and early literacy effectively, with play supporting number understanding, movement and coordination. Children also learnt cooperation through practical moments: making a plasticine birthday cake together, for example, and choosing the closing story by voting. These are small decisions with a useful purpose. Children practise listening, sharing responsibility and accepting other people’s choices.
The inspection’s recommendation to increase challenge in some lessons applied across the school. It should be read alongside the positive findings specifically about early years, rather than treated as a nursery-specific weakness.
Settling begins with an opportunity to try the class. Families can arrange a tour with the Head of Early Years and a taster session where their child spends time with the teacher and other children. The admissions policy also provides for a trial period before joining Kindergarten. This gives children some familiarity with the people and setting before their start.
Communication continues through Tapestry: parents and staff can add examples of a child’s experiences and learning to an individual account. Daily access to staff and twice-yearly parent evenings provide opportunities to discuss progress beyond the app.
Lunch is included in the school fee structure. The early years safeguarding procedures were implemented effectively in September 2025, and children were appropriately supervised. Those findings give practical reassurance about the care surrounding the learning.
SEND support follows a policy that includes EYFS. Individual Pupil Profiles can set out strategies and targets, with parents involved in reviews. Support costs. External agency work is paid for by parents, and some additional help may also carry a charge. Families considering this support need to include those costs in their planning.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Bridgewater’s admissions policy expects children to continue through the school, but admission remains subject to the Head Teacher’s decision. Its EYFS admissions page describes children moving into Reception in September when they are four by 31 August.
For this independent school, Reception enquiries go directly to Bridgewater. Treat the intended classroom progression and the admissions decision as separate matters: continuity of learning is useful, but it is not an unconditional entitlement to a place.
Kindergarten accommodates full-time attendance and part-time patterns by part day or part week. Morning attendance is recommended to help children take part in school activities. Part-time fees are adjusted proportionately.
Extended Day requires no advance reservation. Before-school care begins at 7.30am, with EYFS children using the Prep Library before moving to class; after-school care takes place in the Dining Hall until 6pm. This provides flexibility around collection and the working day.
Nursery funding is available subject to eligibility and the school’s terms and conditions. Contact the Finance Manager for current charges and funding details. Alongside lunch, the fee schedule includes tuition, textbooks, exercise books and sports fees; transport and music tuition are billed separately.
