Spare clothes, water bottles and stories give Clifton's nursery its practical, early childhood focus. Known as Nursery Ash, the provision belongs to Clifton Primary School's Foundation Unit, on Wroe Street in Clifton. The school's age range starts at three; the nursery is part of the school rather than a separate childcare provider.
Families are invited to discuss individual concerns with the Foundation Unit. That gives parents a direct starting point for conversations about their child, alongside resources such as Stories and Rhymes and How Can You Help Your Child In Nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects learning with children's development and everyday care up to age five. Clifton uses this framework for its early years provision, so the nursery's remit extends beyond preparation for lessons.
Early reading has a concrete organising principle. In March 2023, books used by early years children matched the letter sounds they had already learned. That gives children reading material connected to their existing knowledge. Stories and Rhymes also appears among the Foundation Unit's resources for families, offering a specific link between nursery learning and support at home.
Curriculum sequencing. The March 2023 inspection identified unfinished planning in a few subjects across the school, making connections between earlier and newer learning harder. This matters alongside the reading detail: the concern concerned the order of learning, rather than a separate nursery judgement.
In March 2023, early years children became accustomed to the setting promptly and learned its expectations for routines and following directions. This is useful reassurance about settling into group life, although it describes children's experience at that time.
For additional needs, parents can arrange a conversation with the school's SEND coordinator through the office. Clifton monitors children's learning, social development and emotional progress. Physical access includes accessible toilets and wheelchair access through school entrances and into ground floor rooms. Families with mobility needs therefore have concrete access features to consider.
Food has a practical booking system. Across the school, meals are selected through myevolvehub, with orders possible for individual days, weeks or a term. Orders close at 9.30 a.m., and payment accompanies the online booking. This lets families organise meal choices ahead of time. Nursery equipment guidance also asks for a water bottle, with water replacing juice or squash.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat that application as a distinct decision from choosing the nursery, even when hoping to remain at Clifton.
Nursery Ash's equipment guidance asks for a labelled coat and spare clothing, plus hats and gloves in colder weather. Keeping changes of clothes at school makes everyday mishaps easier to manage. Its PE guidance specifies wearing the kit on Wednesday.
For enquiries, contact the school on 0161 921 1845 or email clifton.primaryschool@salford.gov.uk. School tours can be arranged by appointment, giving families an opportunity to discuss the provision in person.
