At a Glance

Yellow Room brings phonics, maths and friendships together through play. It is the nursery class for three- and four-year-olds at Collyhurst Nursery School, a Manchester local authority maintained setting integrated with children’s centre services. Alongside the class, younger children can attend childcare from five months, giving the provision distinct stages rather than one undifferentiated preschool group.

The nursery class operates during term time, while childcare for younger children follows a longer annual calendar. That distinction matters when choosing care around work: the room and booking pattern need to fit your child’s age as well as your family’s week.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework. Here, its practical expression includes sensory exploration, conversation, stories and learning through play. The Collyhurst Constants add a recognisable thread: children practise kindness, curiosity, courage, safety and happiness alongside their learning.

Each room has a different emphasis. Blue Room, for babies aged five to 18 months, combines sensory play with a timetable that adapts to individual care and rest needs. Rainbow Room serves children from 18 months to two and a half years, introducing shared stories and rhymes alongside play near other children. Green Room, for two-and-a-half- to three-year-olds, adds more adult-led group activities as attention develops, with support for toilet training and social interaction.

In Yellow Room, focused phonics and maths activities lead back into play, where children use what they have been learning. Outdoor areas provide another learning space. Four curriculum teams also organise a focus each term, with some experiences involving families and the community.

The January 2025 inspection described daily stories, frequent rhymes and deliberate work on vocabulary, alongside visits to a museum, library and shops. These give children concrete experiences to talk about. Teaching consistency. Some adult interactions were less effective at helping children grasp curriculum content; the improvement action called for staff skills to match the intended teaching approach. This qualifies the otherwise positive picture of language development.

Care and Support

Settling is gradual and personalised. A home visit precedes the start, and a key worker becomes the family’s continuing contact. Parents stay in the room for part of the first mornings, then attendance builds towards the full pattern. The admissions policy gives a usual settling period of a week to ten days, allowing families to plan for this initial commitment.

Communication continues through access to the key worker at both ends of the day, parent consultations twice a year and an annual written report. For children needing additional support, Individual Progress Plans identify smaller learning steps and are reviewed at least three times annually. Referrals to Speech and Language Therapy or Educational Psychology require parental permission, keeping families involved in decisions.

Food allergies have an individual planning process: parents provide an Allergy Action Plan, and dietary arrangements can be discussed with the catering manager. Meal charges apply where meals are provided, unless the child qualifies for free school meals. If illness requires a child to leave their usual room, The Hive is the designated medical room, with a key worker caring for them until collection. Safeguarding was effective in January 2025.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application for primary school through the normal admissions route and meet its deadline; moving between Collyhurst’s nursery rooms is a different process.

Preparation for the next setting includes liaison to share relevant reports, with parents involved throughout. That supports continuity of care and learning, rather than creating an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

Yellow Room runs from 9am to 3pm over 38 weeks. Younger children’s flexible childcare operates from 8am to 4.30pm over 49 weeks. Registration is through the admin team at admin@collyhurst.manchester.sch.uk or 0161 205 1744; tours can be arranged through that process. The school specifies a minimum booking of two days, subject to availability.

Wraparound care is restricted to children with a nursery-class place, with up to 16 places daily and a half-term commitment. The admissions policy gives hours of 8am to 9am and 3pm to 4.30pm; the booking page instead lists afternoons from 3.15pm to 4pm. Agree the collection time when booking.

Funding includes 15 hours for three- and four-year-olds, with 30 hours for eligible working parents of children under five. Funded hours are calculated across 38 weeks, so they do not cover the entire childcare year. The funding guidance also flags possible contributions for meals, snacks and outings, plus charges for additional hours. Consult the school’s charges information for current arrangements.

Parking. Only five regular spaces serve the site, primarily reserved for families with access needs. All parents and carers may use the car park for drop-off and collection from 8am to 8.15am and 3.30pm to 4.30pm, following onsite safety rules and leaving promptly. Plan drop-off and collection around these windows.
