Books, play and children’s own ideas shape the nursery at Fairfield Road Primary School. Its topic-based approach combines experiences with stories, giving children something to explore and language to talk about it. This is the school’s own Nursery class, within its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision.
Children enter in September aged three, in the year in which they turn four. Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 24 and 25 June 2025; that judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Learning follows topics, with books woven into them to introduce vocabulary and sustain children’s interest. Play sits alongside direct experience. Adults guide some activities, while children initiate others, so the day includes both supported learning and opportunities to pursue an idea of their own.
The EYFS curriculum connects physical development and communication with learning about relationships and emotions. It also includes mathematics, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. For parents, that means learning extends beyond early reading and counting: talking, moving, making decisions and getting along with others belong in the same programme.
Persistence and independence receive explicit attention. Children have opportunities to choose, investigate and try again when something proves difficult. Adults use questions that invite more than a single answer, helping children explain their thinking and develop their ideas. The emphasis is on how children learn as well as what they learn.
At the June 2025 inspection, staff reading aloud was identified as part of nursery life. Established routines also begin in early years, helping children understand the expectations of a group setting.
Nursery staffing includes a teacher and teaching assistants within the EYFS team. Progress checks inform each child’s next steps, and parents receive updates alongside practical ideas for supporting learning at home. This gives families a way to continue the learning through everyday interaction.
Work on emotions in EYFS focuses on recognising feelings and helping children talk about them. Curriculum information can also be followed through Class Dojo, year-group pages or conversations with the class teacher. For additional needs, the school describes adaptations to learning and provides a SEND information report, with a link to Tameside’s Local Offer.
Attending Fairfield Road’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the council where they live, using its online admissions process. Nursery attendance must therefore remain a separate decision from the application for a school place.
For September 2026 Reception entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. The school provides application links for residents of Manchester and Tameside, and offers assistance with the application or access to a computer.
The two nursery options are a 15-hour morning place, from 8:45am to 11:45am, and a 30-hour place, from 8:45am to 3:15pm. Families considering the latter are directed to Childcare Choices to check eligibility. The different finishing times matter when planning collection and the rest of the working day.
Nursery applications use a downloadable form, with paper versions obtainable through the office. Initial enquiries go to the office on 0161 370 3625 or admin@fairfieldroad.tameside.sch.uk. This provides a direct route for starting the application process.
