Acting out favourite stories, investigating a bug and bee hotel, and learning through play give Garrett Hall's nursery its character. It belongs to the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) team, with class teachers and teaching assistants supporting the nursery provision.
At the Ofsted inspection on 1 and 2 May 2024, early years provision received an Outstanding judgement. That judgement covers the school's early years provision collectively. The nursery-specific reading finding gives it substance: children were bringing familiar tales to life through acting, making stories something to participate in as well as listen to.
Play and planned teaching share the day. Indoor and outdoor activities remain available alongside sessions led by adults, with literacy, topic work, reading and maths taught in groups or with the class. Carpet activities begin briefly, using practical experiences, then become longer as children develop. This gives children opportunities to explore for themselves while becoming familiar with group learning.
The EYFS combines learning to communicate, manage feelings and move confidently with early literacy, maths, creative work and exploring the world. Activities are adapted to children's development. Friendship and independence are part of the learning, alongside the physical skills needed to handle materials and take part in activities.
Outside, the natural theme has concrete substance. A reading den and outdoor kitchen sit alongside spaces for construction, writing and maths; sand, water and a bug and bee hotel give children materials and living things to investigate. Outdoor activities echo those indoors, so learning can continue across both spaces.
Bug Club Phonics supplies the named approach to early reading. Nursery children learn in groups organised by their phonics ability within their year group. The programme includes putting sounds together for reading and separating words into sounds for spelling. Books matched to children's phonics stage support practice at home, while a separate book chosen for enjoyment gives families another reason to read together.
Settling involves families as well as children. New nursery children and their families attended Inspire sessions in summer 2026, and Nursery Stay and Learn sessions took place that May. These provide concrete opportunities for parents to participate in the nursery experience. In May 2024, children across early years were settling readily into routines, enjoying playing together and developing turn-taking.
Communication includes letters through ParentPay and the weekly Our World This Week newsletter, which carries dates, notices and celebrations. For concerns about learning or development, the class teacher is the first contact. A Structured Conversation brings parents and teacher together to agree next steps, with the school's special educational needs coordinator also available for discussions.
Mellor's supplies nursery lunches within the school's catering service. Choices include sandwiches, jacket potatoes and hot dishes, with fruit and yoghurt among the desserts. Vegetarian options and provision for allergies are part of the service; families should discuss allergies or dietary requirements with the office. Nursery lunches carry a charge, so check current charges with the school.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Wigan Council's online application route; applying to the nursery is handled by the school. Treat these as two distinct decisions and applications.
For the September 2026 Reception intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed. The school's Reception interest form was used to arrange an invitation to an open afternoon; it did not replace the council application for a school place.
The nursery's September 2026 admissions information offered a 30-hour pattern, Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm. Two 15-hour patterns divided the week: Monday and Tuesday with Wednesday morning, or Wednesday afternoon with Thursday and Friday. These are fixed combinations, so families need to consider which part of the week fits their childcare arrangements.
Nursery applications go through the school office and require a birth certificate. For enquiries, contact enquiries@admin.garretthall.wigan.sch.uk or telephone 01942 883340. The nursery starts at 9am; late arrivals must be signed in by an adult at the school office.
