Nursery at Greswell Primary School and Nursery

Outdoor play has a substantial physical setting here: a completed EYFS playground whose design combines water exploration, sand, planting and spaces for imaginative play. Greswell’s nursery occupies a nursery building within the primary school site on Percy Road in Denton. Places are for children turning four between 1 September and 31 August.
The nursery aims to build independence and curiosity through children’s interests. Its practical shape gives families a choice between funded mornings and a longer nursery day, with paid extensions available. That choice changes both the time children spend here and the collection arrangements families need to make.
Play indoors and outside forms the nursery’s approach to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In parent language, the emphasis is on exploring, developing relationships and learning to do things independently. Greswell aims to follow each child’s interests and needs, making play the starting point for learning rather than treating it as a break from learning.
Read Write Inc. phonics begins in Nursery, introducing a named approach to early reading alongside that play. Language also has a practical place in the support offered to families: WellComm activities include pretend games with dolls or teddies, action songs and taking turns to build a tower. These are activities parents can use at home to practise words, instructions and shared play.
The outdoor design gives that exploratory approach concrete possibilities. Movable guttering and a pump feature in the water area; a shaded sandpit and a climbing frame add different kinds of physical play. Other design details include a sensory path near planting, a greenhouse, a bike track and a stage with amphitheatre-style seating. Canopies outside Nursery extend the sheltered space. The playground is complete and ready for children’s use, giving outdoor learning a substantial setting of its own.
Speech and language support has a named tool: WellComm. Its screening uses traffic-light categories to distinguish children needing additional intervention, possible specialist assessment or no intervention at that point. This gives language concerns a route towards support rather than leaving them as a general worry.
For families practising language together, the activities connect learning with familiar objects and routines. A teddy, cup or brush can become a way to work on understanding instructions; songs pair words with actions. For children staying over lunch, families can choose a charged hot meal or send a packed lunch, allowing the meal arrangement to suit the household.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet its deadline. Tameside’s online school admissions service is the route for school applications. Treat the nursery booking and the Reception application as separate decisions.
Funded morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am. The 30-hour option runs from 8:45am to 2:45pm during term time, for eligible families. A charged extension takes that day to 3:25pm. Another arrangement combines 15 funded morning hours with a charged extension from 11:45am to 3:25pm. Ask the school for current charges when choosing the pattern and meal option.
Nursery enquiries can be made using an interest form, with paper copies at the main office, or by calling 0161 336 6854 or emailing admin@greswell.tameside.sch.uk. Nursery families use the side gate to reach the nursery building; the EYFS playground is not a general access route for other children.
