Nursery at Hilton Lane Primary School

Play, conversation and growing independence give Hilton Lane’s nursery its character. This is the school’s nursery provision, but it operates away from the main site, on Prescott Street in Little Hulton. That distinction matters for families planning journeys with children at both sites.
The nursery teacher also holds the EYFS lead role, linking classroom teaching with responsibility for early years. Ofsted’s early years judgement is Requires Improvement; this is not an overall grade for the school.
Stories, pretend play and songs are routes into learning here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together language, physical development, relationships and early reading and maths. Hilton Lane uses play as the starting point, with learning taking place inside and outdoors. Children practise communicating as well as handling materials and exploring their surroundings.
The nursery’s learning goals make that approach concrete. Duplo construction develops control of the hands; playdough gives children practice shaping and manipulating materials. Physical learning includes climbing equipment and riding trikes, while wooden planks, crates and tyres provide opportunities to practise balance. These are practical tasks with a developmental purpose.
Early literacy begins with listening and noticing sounds. Children work towards recognising rhyme, clapping syllables and talking about familiar stories. Maths includes comparing quantities, exploring how much containers hold and using scales to investigate weight. Counting is connected to objects and play rather than treated only as reciting numbers.
Exploration extends to planting and looking after seeds, investigating whether objects sink or float, and noticing seasonal changes. Creative learning includes collage, mixing colours and making models. The emphasis is on what children can try, describe and gradually manage for themselves.
Settling is treated as a progression towards confidence: choosing an activity, seeking an adult when needed and becoming comfortable alongside other children are nursery learning goals. Independence also includes managing clothing, toilet routines and handwashing. Jigsaw links personal and social learning with friendship, feelings and belonging; Calm Me time is included among the ways children learn to manage emotions.
A SENDCo’s remit includes nursery. The school’s support process involves assessing needs, planning help, putting it into practice and reviewing the result with parents. Individual education plans set targets, and parents contribute to discussions about support. The school also accesses speech and language therapy and educational psychology. These arrangements give families a route for raising developmental concerns and taking part in decisions.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process, meeting the applicable deadline. Applications are coordinated by Salford local authority.
Preparation for the change includes learning to talk about feelings around leaving nursery for school. This emotional preparation is separate from the allocation of a place.
Nursery doors open at 9am, and the day ends at 3:15pm. Those timings differ from the main school’s, so families using both sites need to plan collection carefully.
