At a Glance

Play, prayer and learning to think for yourself shape the early years at Holy Cross and All Saints. This nursery class belongs to the Catholic primary school on Trafford Road in Eccles. Its curriculum combines exploration with adult guidance, while kindness and forgiveness are introduced through prayer and Gospel teaching. Faith is part of the day.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) gives learning a broad base. Talking and listening, movement, and managing feelings sit alongside early literacy, maths, creative expression and finding out about the world. For parents, that means the curriculum extends beyond recognising letters or counting: relationships and physical development also receive attention.

Playing and Exploring, Active Learning, and Creating and Thinking Critically are the named learning characteristics used here. Children investigate, persist with difficulties and develop ideas through play and conversations with adults. The emphasis is on how they approach a task as well as what they learn. EYFS maths planning includes counting objects and comparing quantities; art begins with experimenting and making marks.

Books also give children a say. In May 2023, Ofsted described nursery children choosing their next book by voting, alongside early-years children enjoying familiar stories and rhymes. This makes decision-making concrete: children can express a preference over something that matters to them. Nursery teaching was also described positively in that inspection, with staff able to plan children's learning and help them learn successfully.

Care and Support

Parents of early-years children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) help shape their child's individual education plan, with a copy of each new plan available for use at home. A home-school book can inform activities for children who find communication difficult, giving staff insight into their needs and interests. Information can also be exchanged by phone or through informal daily discussions at drop-off and collection.

Support follows a graduated approach. Classroom adjustments include visual prompts and structured routines, with targeted help reviewed regularly. The Salford Thrive Graduated Approach distinguishes classroom advice, targeted interventions and specialist intervention. That gives families a sequence for discussing support as needs become clearer.

Across the school site, wheelchair access and an accessible toilet are concrete accessibility features. The SEND Support Hub provides a direct route to the SEND coordinator by telephone or email. For safeguarding concerns, families can contact the headteacher through the school office. Operation Encompass connects the school with Salford Local Authority and Greater Manchester Police following domestic incidents, allowing a trusted adult to support an affected child.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal primary admissions process; familiarity with the school should never be treated as an offer.

The admissions page directs families to Salford City Council. For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. The useful distinction is between choosing the nursery day and applying for a school place: these are separate decisions and processes.

Practical Information

The school timetable places nursery lunch between 11.15am and 12.15pm. School-wide arrangements provide classroom access from 8.40am, registration at 8.45am and collection at classroom doors at 3.15pm; these are school timetable arrangements rather than a nursery session booking menu. Parents wait with children until the classroom door opens, and collection requires a trusted adult.

A nursery funding letter concerning 30 hours is listed among the school's forms. Medical paperwork includes allergy, asthma and healthcare-plan forms, giving families a route to share care needs.

Enquiries go to the school office on 0161 789 4386 or office@holycrossallsaints.salford.sch.uk. Families considering a school place can arrange to look around through the office.

FAQs
