Up to 52 full time places give Irlam Primary School's nursery a substantial place within the school on Liverpool Road in Irlam. This is the school's own nursery class, with entry for children who are three before 31 August in their admission year. For families, that birthday condition matters when deciding which intake fits their child.
Nursery teachers and nursery teaching assistants form the team, alongside an EYFS teaching assistant. The structure brings both teaching and classroom support roles into the early years provision.
EYFS means Early Years Foundation Stage. The nursery's historical home-learning examples help explain early learning in practical terms: stories can encourage listening and talking, making can develop children's use of their hands, and growing a seed gives them changes to observe. Stories, making and growing feature in the nursery's 2021 home-learning activities: The Very Hungry Caterpillar accompanied an invitation to plant a seed, photograph it and watch its growth. These were activities for home, rather than a description of today's classroom timetable, but they give concrete examples of learning connected to books and practical exploration.
Other 2021 activities included making a Chinese lantern, a paper chain dragon and spring rolls. Story choices included That's Not My Penguin and Say Hello to the Snowy Animals. For parents sharing those activities, the combination offered ways to bring stories, craft and food preparation into learning at home.
During that home-learning period, families received a suggested nursery timetable by email. Activity packs included workbooks, with delivery arranged for families having difficulty collecting them. This gave parents materials as well as suggested activities to work through with their children.
Preparation for starting nursery included introductory videos in the 2024 intake materials, showing children the nursery interior before they started. A transition book was also offered for families to share, alongside a message from the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO). Those resources gave parents a way to introduce the change at home.
For concerns about a child's support, the first contact is the class teacher; unresolved concerns then go to the SENCO. That provides a clear next step when a family needs a further discussion. Speech and language support is also signposted through Speak Up Salford.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or give admission priority. Children who attend are assessed on the same basis as children who do not. Familiarity with the school therefore needs to be kept separate from the allocation of a place.
Families must make a separate application to Salford local authority through its online primary admissions route, meeting the normal application deadline. The school office can help with the application process.
Full time nursery places are offered, and applications go through Salford's online nursery admissions route. For enquiries or to arrange a look around, telephone the school on 0161 775 2015. A visit offers families an opportunity to discuss the nursery with the school before making their choice.
