Five mornings, five afternoons or a full school day: Kings Road’s maintained nursery has a clear weekly rhythm for children aged 3 to 4. Within Kings Road Primary School in Firswood, it provides 26 morning places, 26 afternoon places and a further 26 places for children using the 30-hour entitlement. These are term-time patterns, so families need childcare arrangements that fit school holidays.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 27 and 28 June 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection.
Early reading begins within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the nursery’s early education framework. In June 2023, children began phonics on joining early years, with staff trained to teach the programme. This puts learning about sounds into children’s first stage of school life.
The curriculum needs a qualification alongside that positive detail. The June 2023 inspection identified insufficiently precise learning goals in parts of early years, which meant teaching sometimes missed essential content or introduced it in an unhelpful sequence. For parents, the concern is how securely children build knowledge across those areas.
A full-day place can sometimes operate in the part-time classroom when the usual full-time provision is full and both sessions have vacancies. Children then meet different classmates across the day and may revisit a song or phonics activity in the afternoon. Staff try to limit repetition. This arrangement can be reduced to 15 hours with a term’s notice if demand for part-time places increases, so the classroom arrangement matters as well as the hours offered.
Settling starts before the first full session. The February 2025 nursery policy sets out a summer taster, followed by a home visit from two nursery staff in the first September week. Attendance at the taster is required before a place can be confirmed. Small groups begin gradually over the opening weeks, giving children time to adjust before taking up their full hours.
Packed lunches are required for children attending full days, including those placed across the part-time sessions, because nursery children do not receive school meals. Families therefore prepare lunch each day. Lunchtime supervision carries an additional charge unless parents choose to take their child home for lunch.
For children with SEND, the school’s support arrangements include a Provision Map and meetings with families to review progress and plan support. A school Sensory Room can be used for interventions or as a quiet refuge. The building is on one level, with wheelchair access at every entrance. These are school facilities and arrangements that families can discuss when planning their child’s support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through their own local authority by 15 January for entry the following September. Keeping a nursery place and applying for Reception are separate responsibilities.
For nursery children who obtain a Reception place, taster sessions usually take place on school transition days in July before the September start. This gives children an opportunity to prepare for the next stage. It does not change how places are allocated.
Morning sessions run from 8:30am to 11:30am; afternoons run from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Full-time nursery runs from 8:30am to 3:15pm. Each pattern operates Monday to Friday in term time, with attendance expected on all five days.
The nursery provides 15 funded hours for all families and 30 for eligible families. Full-time eligibility must be renewed every three months. Under the February 2025 policy, losing eligibility can mean moving to 15 hours after the grace period; if no part-time place is free, attendance may end.
Parents choosing lunchtime supervision must pay in advance each half term, including for absences. Alternatively, they can collect their child for lunch, but cannot alternate between the two options. Contact the school office on 0161 881 3571 for nursery enquiries and current charges.
