At a Glance

Sounds, rhyme and the confidence to do things independently give Manor Green Primary Academy’s nursery its character. This is the school’s own nursery provision in Haughton Green, with early learning that puts language alongside practical skills and emotional development.

The April 2026 Ofsted inspection judged early years to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, including its specialist provision, rather than constituting a separate nursery rating. For families, the useful detail lies in how children learn and receive support.

The Nursery Day

Language gives the nursery day a clear focus. Adults introduce and extend vocabulary through their exchanges with children, using straightforward, structured techniques. Nursery children explore rhyme and learn to distinguish sounds: a starting point for listening carefully and developing the skills needed for later reading.

Early learning also includes number skills and the small movements involved in fine motor development. These sit alongside confidence and independence, so the emphasis reaches beyond what children know to what they can increasingly manage for themselves. Children develop communication, early number skills and independence alongside their emotional understanding.

Children’s next steps are shaped by close assessment of their needs. Staff use that understanding to decide what to teach next, making the curriculum responsive to the children taking part. Emotional learning has a place too. Children begin recognising their feelings and learning how to regulate them, giving them skills that matter when sharing activities and coping with frustration.

Care and Support

Children across early years settle promptly, including those in the specialist provision. Adults help them grow more self-reliant and assured. This matters because settling involves more than becoming familiar with a classroom: children also need the confidence to take part in learning.

Support begins with recognising needs early. Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, or other obstacles to learning, are identified promptly in early years. Leaders seek professional help from outside the school when necessary, connecting assessment with additional expertise rather than leaving it as an observation alone.

Parents are encouraged to participate in their child’s education and school life. Books and bagels sessions at the beginning of the school day provide one concrete opportunity for that involvement. Across the school, safeguarding standards were met in April 2026, with concerns recognised, addressed and managed.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception admissions process and meet the relevant deadline. Treat choosing a nursery and securing a school place as separate decisions.

The nursery’s work on independence, communication and emotional understanding supports children’s development. Those learning experiences should be considered on their own merits, separately from the allocation of Reception places.
