Nursery at Moor Allerton Preparatory School

Small teaching groups and a day that mixes classroom learning with outdoor activity define Moor Allerton’s school pre-school provision in West Didsbury. Marketed for children aged three to four, it has a stated limit of 20 children in a Nursery class. That is a class-size limit, rather than a total number of nursery places.
The distinction between the school’s pre-school and its provision for younger children matters. This review covers the school nursery classes. A separate setting for younger children has its own Ofsted registration; the school’s nursery classes sit within its early years provision.
Learning combines early literacy and number work with exploration, interaction and practical activity. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers children’s development beyond reading and counting: speaking and listening, movement, relationships and emotional development sit alongside creative expression and discovering how the world works. For parents, this means the educational focus includes how children communicate and play together, as well as their first academic skills.
Outdoor learning and sport alternate with classroom activity. Physical education includes opportunities to practise cooperation, sharing and competition, giving children a different way to participate from activities indoors. Movement is part of the learning programme.
There are named options beyond the classroom, too. The club list includes Yoga Bugs and football for pre-school children, plus gymnastics for children from pre-school upwards. Street Dance also includes pre-school children. These are optional activities with additional charges, and the club programme is subject to change.
Teachers get to know children individually, with support extending beyond the early years team to other school staff. Progress is monitored regularly to recognise both developing strengths and difficulties. That gives support a starting point in the child’s learning, rather than treating every child’s next step as identical.
Food has its own place in school life. The school lunch menu includes meat and vegetarian main dishes, with alternatives such as soup, sandwiches, pasta and jacket potatoes. Meals are prepared fresh. The menu gives families concrete examples of the school’s food provision.
At the ISI monitoring inspection on 13 December 2024, the safeguarding standards checked, including the relevant EYFS requirements, were met. Staff understood how to raise concerns about adults, leaders kept the necessary records, and required recruitment checks took place before adults started work. This was a focused compliance inspection, rather than a nursery quality grade.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process. Treat choosing the nursery and securing the next school place as separate decisions, even when the intended destination is Moor Allerton itself.
The school’s charges distinguish pre-school attendance from pre-school with wraparound care. Wraparound, music tuition and extracurricular activities carry additional charges. Families should obtain current charges from the school office before deciding which attendance package suits them.
Ask the school office how any applicable Early Years funding would affect your child’s pre-school charges.
Private visits can be arranged on most weekdays. Complete the pre-school enquiry form for contact from the Admissions Team, or call the school office on 0161 445 4521. A visit offers an opportunity to meet teachers and explore classrooms before making a decision.
