Nursery at Newall Green Primary School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
Stories, rhymes and learning to listen give Newall Green’s early years provision its clearest character. The nursery belongs to Newall Green Primary School on Firbank Road in Wythenshawe, Manchester. Its staffing includes a nursery phase leader, teachers and teaching assistants, giving families a nursery team within the wider primary school.
Listening is part of the learning here. In October 2023, Ofsted found that early years children noticed sounds around them and took pleasure in stories and rhymes, developing foundations for reading. These are activities with a practical purpose: children practise paying attention to sound and language before tackling reading itself.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum builds knowledge in successive steps. The October 2023 findings described an ambitious early years curriculum and experiences that helped children understand their surroundings. For parents, the emphasis is on learning that accumulates over time, with stories and rhymes providing concrete examples of how that begins.
Support for additional needs starts before nursery entry. A SEND coordinator joins transition meetings with nursery parents to gather information before children begin. That gives families an opportunity to explain their child’s needs before classroom routines start. The school’s SEND team includes a coordinator responsible for EYFS and Key Stage 1.
If difficulties emerge, teachers first try classroom strategies, then discuss continuing concerns with parents and involve the SEND coordinator. Observation and family input help determine the next steps. Children receiving SEND Support have a My Personal Plan, developed with parents, which identifies outcomes and the provision intended to achieve them. Reviews happen at least three times a year, so support can be reconsidered as needs change.
Across the school, teaching adaptations include extra time to process information, visual timetables and vocabulary introduced ahead of learning. Building adaptations include ramps, handrails and adapted bathrooms. These are school arrangements rather than a separate nursery package; they provide useful context for families discussing access and individual support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority; Manchester residents apply through Manchester. In the 2025–2026 admission arrangements, nursery attendance carries no Reception priority. The categories cover looked-after and previously looked-after children, exceptional medical or social needs, siblings and other applicants, with distance determining priority within categories.
For children with SEND, moving between classes includes staff sharing information about needs and support. A transition booklet with photographs of the next classroom and staff is an option, and classes have a transition day. Familiarisation and information sharing support the change of class; they do not alter the separate admissions process.
Apply directly to the school for a nursery place. The school office can be reached on 0161 437 2872, and the address is Firbank Road, Wythenshawe, Manchester M23 2YH.
Parents are encouraged to use the playground at school drop-off and collection. Tell staff if collection arrangements change, including a delay or a different person collecting, so they can manage the handover with the correct information.
No. Nursery and Reception require separate applications, and nursery attendance carries no priority in the 2025–2026 Reception arrangements.
