At a Glance

Stories, rhymes and jumping along a number line give Prestolee’s nursery its character: an introduction to school through language, movement and play. The nursery belongs to Prestolee Primary School’s Early Years Foundation Unit on Church Road in Stoneclough. It is school nursery provision, with learning organised within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Ofsted graded early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 11 and 12 June 2024. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it is not a separate nursery inspection. The nursery-specific finding was a curriculum that helps children enjoy stories and rhymes, a useful starting point for families who want books to become part of everyday life.

The Nursery Day

Play has a learning purpose here. In plain parent language, the EYFS approach develops children’s ability to listen, talk, keep trying and work together, alongside early number and literacy skills. Children have opportunities to explore ideas and practise what they are learning.

Number work gives that approach a concrete shape. Children jump along a number line, work out which numeral follows another up to 5, and compare groups of objects to decide which has fewer or more. These activities connect number symbols with movement and things children can handle, rather than leaving counting as a recitation.

Across the early years provision, making activities take place outside as well as indoors. Construction kits, tools and materials let children build, alter their creations and explain their decisions. The emphasis includes handling tools safely and gaining control over materials. Technology also has a practical role across EYFS: Beebots, remote control toys and Purple Mash tasks introduce instructions and directional language. These are early years activities, rather than a promise that each appears in every nursery session.

Care and Support

Tapestry gives parents a connection with nursery learning. Staff add photographs and comments to each nursery child’s online learning journey, with notifications when observations are added. Parents can respond and contribute photographs or observations from home. That makes communication a two-way exchange.

Speech and language support includes WELCOM assessment for children in EYFS, alongside work with the NHS speech and language therapy team. Parents with concerns can approach the class teacher or SENCO, giving families a clear starting point for discussing additional needs.

Snack choices have firm boundaries. Children may bring fruit, vegetables, plain crackers or cheese, while the school excludes nuts and nut products, including snacks carrying a may-contain-nuts label. Families need to check packaging as well as ingredients.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Bolton Council’s normal school admissions route and meet the deadline for their intake.

For the 2025–2026 admissions cycle, nursery attendance conferred no priority: allocation used criteria covering care status, child protection, siblings, medical need and distance. That dated position should not be treated as a promise about a later intake. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions.

Practical Information

The standard nursery day runs from 8:45am to 2:45pm. Morning nursery sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am, while afternoon sessions run from 12:15pm to 3:15pm, using the EYFS entrance. Confirm the booked pattern and its collection time before starting.

Children aged 3 and 4 receive the universal 15-hour entitlement from the term following their third birthday. Eligible families may receive 30 funded hours; the school needs a valid eligibility code before term starts, and parents must reconfirm every 3 months. Extra paid sessions depend on availability, staffing and ratios. Booked non-funded sessions remain chargeable during sickness or holidays, so families should check current charges with the school before committing.

Wraparound care requires children to have turned 3 and be fully toilet trained, and places depend on availability. Separate booking and charges may apply. Since 13 April 2026, Friday After School Club has finished at 4:30pm, with booking through ParentPay. That earlier finish matters when planning a working week.

Nursery enquiries and applications go directly to the main office on 01204 331521. If somebody else will collect your child, provide written advice to the school.
