Nursery at Sedgley Park Community Primary School

Paper aeroplane races, firefighter role play and Forest School give Sedgley Park's nursery a practical, playful character. This is the school's own provision on King's Road in Prestwich, with an intake of 26 children at any one time. Children join in September after turning three, attending either part time or full time.
The choice of attendance pattern matters here: some activities fall in a morning, others in an afternoon. Families choosing a shorter session should weigh that timetable alongside their childcare needs. We hold no published inspection grade for it.
Language and play shape the learning. The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, which means building knowledge, understanding and learning skills through experiences indoors and outside. Sedgley Park believes children's existing learning should be the starting point, giving their interests and experiences a place in the classroom.
Speaking and listening receive specific attention. Stories and books sit alongside rhymes, songs and games; imaginative play gives children another way to practise vocabulary. Pretending to be doctors or firefighters turns that language work into something children can act out. Making paper aeroplanes and comparing their speed brings testing and discussion into play, too.
For the current half term, PE falls on Tuesday morning and Forest School on Thursday afternoon. Forest School uses a natural setting and learning directed by children's interests, extending experiences beyond indoor activities. Spring walks and animal-mask making add further concrete examples of nursery learning. These are useful details when deciding whether a morning or afternoon place suits your child.
Settling starts before September. Children and their parents are invited to a summer Stay and Play session to meet staff and become familiar with the setting. Nursery staff also visit families at home to learn about the child before their start. That gives parents an early opportunity to explain needs and routines, rather than leaving those conversations until the first nursery day.
Family involvement continues through shared activities: in spring 2025, nursery children took part in a bedtime-story session with their parents. For additional support, the school's Early Help team includes pastoral and mental health support alongside its special educational needs coordinator. Toileting, behaviour and establishing routines are among the concerns families can raise.
School Grid handles the school's meal ordering. Parents can examine recipes and menus and set allergy controls, helping them make informed choices about food. Meals are ordered online in advance; a sandwich is supplied if an order has not been made.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Sedgley Park. Families must make a separate application through the local authority where they live. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions.
For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed. Familiarity with the school through nursery attendance does not replace the separate application.
Morning places run from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoon places run from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Full-time attendance runs from 8.45am to 3.15pm, with an earlier Wednesday finish. Build that exception into collection arrangements. Full-time attendance carries a weekly charge; contact the school for current charges.
Nursery enquiries go through the school office on 0161 773 3146 or sedgleypark@bury.gov.uk. An application involves a form and proof of the child's birth date using a passport or birth certificate. School visits are encouraged with your child, with a senior staff member leading the tour during the working day.
Uniform is compulsory. Nursery children wear a white polo shirt, and their PE footwear requirement is pumps only. Clean second-hand uniform is available through the office, providing another option when preparing for the start.
