A planned early learning curriculum, but an uneven experience for children: that is the central consideration at St Michael’s nursery in Whitefield. The provision belongs to the Roman Catholic primary school on Ribble Drive, bringing nursery education into a Catholic school setting.
In January 2026, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Needs attention. This judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. Curriculum planning gives children a sequence of learning, but the teaching does not consistently turn that plan into the intended experience. For parents, the distinction between what is planned and what happens during activities matters here.
The trust’s early years approach uses the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and Development Matters. These guide learning and development during the early years. At St Michael’s, the curriculum connects Nursery learning with the next stage and addresses different areas of children’s development, rather than treating activities as isolated tasks.
Adult teaching and independent activities form part of the early years experience. In January 2026, teaching led by adults helped children gain knowledge, with phonics supporting early reading. That finding concerns the school’s early years provision as a whole. Independent activities were less consistent: some tasks did not suit children’s developmental stage, reducing the learning they gained from them.
Conversation is another important consideration. Some children received focused discussion with adults, while others missed the help needed to expand their vocabulary. The improvement priorities are practical: choose activities that fit children’s learning needs and develop staff expertise so that adult conversations support children consistently. Parents should weigh the independent part of the day as carefully as organised teaching.
Relationships with parents and carers were a positive feature of early years in January 2026. Leaders also sought help from outside the school when necessary. These relationships provide a basis for discussing a child’s development and support.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the learning concerns matter directly. Some were among those whose activities did not provide sufficiently targeted learning. Steps to strengthen early years were under way, but their full effect could not yet be assessed. Families should keep the suitability of everyday activities central to discussions about support.
Safeguarding concerns should go first to the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead. This gives parents a clear starting point for raising a concern.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Admissions are coordinated by the relevant local authority; parents use their home local authority’s process.
The curriculum links Nursery and Reception learning. That educational connection is separate from allocation of a school place.

Activities needed to suit children’s development more closely, and staff needed further expertise to make their interactions with children consistently effective.
