Two nursery sites give St George's Central a distinctive shape: Darlington Street serves three- and four-year-olds on the school site, while Lancaster Avenue provides for children aged two and three in a community setting. The distinction matters. A family choosing provision for a two-year-old is choosing a different location from the school-based nursery, rather than simply a younger group in the same building.
Both belong to Tyldesley St George's Central CofE Primary School and Nursery. At the Ofsted inspection on 14 and 15 June 2023, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than constituting a separate nursery inspection.
Stories and rhymes are a concrete part of nursery learning. In June 2023, staff used them to build children's enthusiasm for reading, giving books a place in the day before children become independent readers. Listening and joining in provide an accessible starting point.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for nursery learning. Here, the everyday picture includes learning to share resources, handle feelings and follow staff routines. These are practical foundations for taking part in a group, alongside the introduction to reading. In June 2023, children in early years behaved well and learned well within a curriculum that set out what they should learn and when.
Adult conversation. The same inspection identified missed chances to develop children's understanding through discussion. Teachers sometimes needed to think more carefully about their exchanges with children. For families, the distinction is useful: engaging activities matter, but so does the adult conversation that helps a child think further about an idea.
Sharing and managing emotions form part of learning from Nursery onwards. In June 2023, children were developing these habits alongside the routines established by staff. Care and learning therefore overlap in the ordinary business of using equipment together and taking part in the nursery group.
Safeguarding responsibilities include early years leads at Lancaster Avenue, with both a lead and deputy role. Staff and governors receive safeguarding training at regular intervals, and children are encouraged to raise concerns. This gives families a defined safeguarding structure alongside the teaching team. The school also has a SEND co-ordinator, who can be contacted through the school office email for discussions about additional needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions; attending either nursery site should not be treated as securing the next place.
