Outdoor access gives Whitefield’s nursery day its clearest character: children can use the outdoor provision throughout the day, with a playground shared with Reception and kept separate from older pupils at playtime. That gives the youngest children their own space within the school.
The nursery belongs to Whitefield Community Primary School on Victoria Avenue in Whitefield, Manchester. Nursery and Reception form a shared early years phase within the school.
Morning attendance runs from 8:45am to noon; the afternoon session runs from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Nursery children have a 15-minute morning playtime, while outdoor access extends beyond that scheduled break. For a child who enjoys being outside, the distinction matters: outdoor provision is part of the day, rather than confined to playtime.
Large school grounds and use of the local forest give outdoor learning a physical setting. Activities extend from the Foundation stage through the school, combining learning in the grounds with experiences elsewhere. The school aims to use these experiences to develop communication, teamwork and problem-solving. Those are practical reasons for taking learning beyond the classroom, alongside opportunities to explore the surrounding area.
My Happy Mind adds an emotional learning routine. All children across the school participate on Monday mornings and Friday afternoons, and use its techniques during the day. Daily breathing practice is intended to help children calm themselves; work on gratitude and character strengths gives them language for discussing feelings and relationships.
Speech and language receive a specific check through Wellcomm screening for all children. Its purpose is to identify possible development difficulties early, giving families a concrete starting point for conversations about communication needs.
The pastoral and inclusion team includes a Special Educational Needs Coordinator and a Child and Family Support Officer. Parents can discuss their child’s needs with the coordinator through the school office. This provides a clear contact route when a family needs support.
Communication also has a practical boundary. Class Dojo shares information, but teachers do not read or answer messages sent through it during normal operation. Collection changes should go straight to the office, so urgent arrangements reach the intended contact.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Bury’s coordinated admissions process and meet the normal application deadline. Registering interest with the school, or receiving an encouraging indication, does not secure an offer. Keep that application separate from decisions about nursery attendance.
The shared early years playground provides a link between nursery and Reception within everyday school life. It is a shared facility, and should not be treated as an admissions advantage.

Collection arrangements. Tell the office if you are delayed or someone else will collect your child. Parents are encouraged to use the playground at the beginning and end of the school day.
Travel. Bike racks are available, but the school car park is reserved for staff. Families needing access because of disability or other specific circumstances should discuss this with the headteacher before relying on parking there.
