The pre-eminent market town of the Sherwood Forest belt, Mansfield has held its royal charter since Henry III granted it in 1227, and remains the administrative centre of Nottinghamshire's largest district. Twelve miles north of Nottingham, it is served by the Robin Hood Line, which reaches Nottingham city centre in around 40 minutes. Forest Town and Bull Farm draw families competing for primary places, and the wider residential spread takes in Mansfield Woodhouse and Warsop to the north, with Langwith Junction at the district's outer edge. Around 110,000 people live across the district today, and Mansfield is the only local authority in Nottinghamshire to elect its own mayor.
