Nursery at Salmestone Primary School

Stick insects hatching and beans planted by children give Salmestone’s nursery a concrete starting point: learning about living things by watching them change. Play and creativity shape the provision’s own description of learning. The examples give that description substance, with children taking part rather than simply hearing about a topic.
Basecamp Nursery is part of Salmestone Primary School in Margate, on College Road. This is the school’s nursery provision, so the review concerns that first stage of learning rather than the older pupils’ education.
A life cycles topic brings animals and plants into children’s learning. Nursery children have watched stick insects hatch, grow and shed their skin. They have also learned about the insects’ leaf diet. These are tangible changes to notice and discuss: growth becomes something children can observe rather than an abstract idea.
Planting beans gives children a different way to explore the same theme. Alongside planting beans, they have been learning what seeds need for growth. The animal and plant activities connect a shared question across two examples: how do living things develop? Children have something specific to talk about and something they have done themselves.
In October 2024, early years children also talked confidently about topics including cats and bats. Staff understood individual children’s strengths and obstacles to learning, and children gained confidence. For parents, the useful connection is between the topic and the child: learning includes developing the confidence to explain an interest, as well as exploring it.
Support for special educational needs and/or disabilities extends into the early years. In October 2024, children with SEND received help to take part in the curriculum, and early years children developed independence quickly. Inclusion here concerns participation in learning, with independence developing alongside adult support.
Understanding each child’s learning needs matters to that support. The early years team’s knowledge of individual strengths and barriers gives a specific basis for helping children build confidence. These findings concern early years collectively; they should be read at that scope rather than as a separate nursery rating.
A separate application. Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at Salmestone Primary School. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing a nursery place and obtaining a school place are separate decisions; familiarity with the school should not be treated as an admission entitlement.
Nursery enquiries can go through the school office by telephone on 01843 220949 or by email to office@salmestone-tkat.org. The school and nursery share the College Road address, Margate, CT9 4DB.
