Pretend restaurants, police role-play and toy vehicles rolling down slopes give Caistor’s early years provision a practical, imaginative character. The nursery forms part of Caistor CofE and Methodist Primary School in Southdale, Caistor, where education spans ages 3 to 11. It is a pre-school starting point within the primary school, rather than a separate childcare setting.
Love, Courage and Respect are the school’s values. For families, the distinctive question is how that school identity translates into younger children’s learning: play, conversation and adult support provide the clearest examples here.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together learning to communicate, move confidently and manage feelings, alongside early literacy, number work, creativity and discovery. In practical terms, children have opportunities to talk and listen, explore materials and make sense of people and the world around them. These areas connect rather than operate as isolated subjects.
In March 2024, early years children took restaurant orders and acted out police roles. They also experimented with toy vehicles on different gradients. Such play gives conversation a purpose and turns an everyday object into something to investigate. Mathematical learning starts with manageable steps, while checks on understanding help staff address gaps in knowledge.
Books are another thread. Staff share stories regularly with children entering pre-school, building on their existing early reading skills. During World Book Day activities, older pupils joined early years children to support reading, bringing younger and older children together around books.
The wider school grounds include a field, woodland and playground equipment. Those physical spaces support outdoor learning across the school; they describe the surrounding school environment rather than a separate nursery garden.
Adult interaction is a strength of the early years experience. In March 2024, adults adjusted both help and challenge to children’s needs, supporting their learning and behaviour. Children’s imaginative play sat alongside attentive adult involvement, rather than being left to carry learning by itself.
Food has an on-site base: the school’s catering team prepares meals in its own kitchen each day, using seasonal and local ingredients. This is a school-wide arrangement. The school also has a deputy headteacher who holds the SENDCo role, providing a named responsibility within the team for special educational needs and disabilities.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet its deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and obtaining a school place as separate decisions.
Transition support includes virtual stories, classroom tours, photographs and an information presentation for parents. These help children become familiar with staff and school surroundings, while parents can work through the presentation at a convenient time. Familiarity supports preparation; it does not settle admission.
The school is on Southdale, Caistor, Market Rasen, LN7 6LY. Visits can be arranged by ringing for an appointment. Contact the office on 01472 851396 or email enquiries@caistorprimary.co.uk to enquire or arrange a visit.
