Two three-hour sessions give Captain Cook's nursery a clear shape: a morning or an afternoon within the primary school on Stokesley Road, Marton. The school takes children from age three. For families choosing an introduction to school life, the practical distinction is between the nursery session itself and separately booked care afterwards.
Morning nursery runs from 8:30 to 11:30; the afternoon runs from 12:30 to 15:30. These are distinct sessions, so families can plan around a defined start and finish.
In November 2022, Ofsted found that early-years children were comfortable exploring and attempting unfamiliar activities, with adults supporting their language and social development well. Those findings describe children gaining confidence alongside communication skills. The curriculum picture was less secure: in November 2022, changes to early-years teaching were still incompletely established, especially in Nursery, restricting children's opportunities to develop vocabulary and essential knowledge. Curriculum consistency. This was a specific concern about nursery learning, making consistent delivery an important consideration for parents.
Preparation for children joining Nursery includes conversations with parents at home or in school, alongside contact with previous settings and relevant professionals. This gives staff information about a child's needs before the start. In November 2022, early-years children were settled and had close relationships with the adults supporting them.
Language needs receive an early check. All nursery children across Lingfield Education Trust complete a language screen intended to identify communication difficulties promptly. Parents of children receiving SEND support contribute to plans, with targets and provision reviewed each term. Class Dojo, telephone calls and email provide routes for those conversations, alongside appointments with the teacher or SENDCo.
The school's Adventure Suite provides additional provision for children whose needs qualify, combining tailored sessions with time in their usual class. It is led by the SENDCo with specialist teaching assistants. There is also a nurture room in Lower School for children who find classroom demands difficult. These are school support arrangements, with access determined by individual need. Across the school, teachers hold qualified teacher status and teaching assistants have at least a Level 2 qualification.
Food is part of After School Club: children receive a light snack, with a sandwich and fruit among the examples, plus water or juice. That provision belongs to the club rather than the nursery session.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must submit a separate application through their home local authority's normal admissions process and meet its closing date. Nursery attendance is therefore a childcare and early-learning choice, rather than an assured school place.
For the 2025-26 admissions cycle, nursery attendance carried no Reception priority under the Middlesbrough criteria. A sibling attending nursery also did not count towards sibling priority; that criterion applied to siblings of compulsory school age.
Transition support is separate from allocation. For children with SEND, preparations can include extra classroom visits, meeting the teacher, visual timetables and social stories, tailored to the child's needs. These help explain changing routines rather than confer an admissions advantage.
After School Club accepts children from nursery upwards and runs during term time from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. Its base is the lower school hall. When conditions are suitable, children can use outdoor play equipment, AstroTurf and the wild area under staff supervision, giving the club an outdoor option as well as indoor games.
Places are allocated in booking order, with advance reservations through Arbor. This makes booking ahead part of planning the afternoon. Contact the school for current charges.
