At a Glance

Purposeful play and carefully developed language give this nursery its character. At St Gregory's Catholic Primary School on Sandy Lane in Lydiate, the nursery forms part of the school's early years provision. Children begin building the foundations of literacy and maths alongside independence and social development.

Ofsted's December 2025 inspection judged the school's early years provision to be Strong standard. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

Adult teaching and independent play both contribute to learning. Children have opportunities to explore for themselves, while staff use conversations to introduce new words and develop their understanding. Language development is planned carefully, making these exchanges part of a deliberate teaching approach rather than simply conversation alongside an activity.

The early years foundation stage brings together learning and personal development. Here, the emphasis includes early literacy, mathematics and communication, with reading given particular attention. From the Nursery Year, children begin developing the skills that later learning will build on. Writing starts with making marks and practising a pencil grip. These are practical beginnings, giving children opportunities to develop control before more formal writing.

Catholic teaching has specific content in the Come and See programme. Early years autumn themes include Myself, exploring God's love for each child, and Welcome, introducing baptism and belonging. Families are encouraged to share photographs and discuss people and celebrations that matter to them. This connects religious learning with experiences children recognise from home.

Care and Support

Relationships with families help staff understand children's starting points. In December 2025, partnerships with parents were well established across early years, with particular attention to children who needed additional support. Information from home helps staff build on what a child already knows, rather than treating every newcomer as having the same experience.

Personal and emotional development receives deliberate attention, including learning to act independently and care for living things. The Healthy Living Partnership Programme also includes nursery children. Its content combines movement with healthy habits and food choices, bringing physical wellbeing into learning.

For discussions about special educational needs and disabilities, parents can contact the school's SENCO on 0151 526 5856. That provides a direct route to discuss a child's needs with the relevant school role.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at St Gregory's. Families must make a separate application through Sefton Local Authority's admissions process and meet the normal application deadline. Applications begin in the autumn term, and families select three school preferences.

The school's 2023/24 admission arrangements did not include nursery attendance among the Reception oversubscription criteria. Those arrangements belong to that admissions cycle and should not be treated as the rules for a later intake. Keep the two decisions separate: choosing the nursery is a decision about early education, while obtaining a Reception place requires its own application.

Practical Information

The school office is the contact route for nursery enquiries: telephone 0151 526 5856 or email admin.stgregorys@schools.sefton.gov.uk. The school is on Sandy Lane, Lydiate, L31 2LB. Parents discussing additional needs can also request contact with the SENCO through the school telephone number.
