Nursery at Brooksward School

Gardens, a timber-framed outdoor classroom and Forest School give Brooksward’s youngest children places to play beyond their rooms. The nursery and pre-school take children from six weeks to five years, with capacity for up to 18 babies, 24 toddlers and 40 preschool children. Full-time and part-time care are both offered.
The provision occupies two school buildings: the day nursery shares a building with Key Stage 1, while pre-school shares the other with Key Stage 2. Refurbished rooms provide indoor play space, and both the nursery and pre-school have their own enclosed outdoor areas. This is provision for babies as well as children approaching school age.
Outdoor time is a daily part of the routine, whatever the weather. Children use the gardens and enclosed play areas, with access to the timber-framed outdoor classroom and the school’s Forest School. Those spaces give outdoor play a place in the day rather than making it an occasional extra.
Planning also starts with the child. A key person uses children’s interests to shape their learning and follows their development. The preschool team collaborates with the school’s Foundation Stage leaders on the curriculum, which the nursery aims to use to encourage curiosity and an enduring interest in learning.
Named activities add variety across the age groups. Music Bugs is for babies and Robot Reg for toddlers. Preschool activities include Hip Hop Tots, Socatots and theatre or role play, with the starred preschool activities alternating termly. Rag Dolly Annas also features among the termly enrichments, alongside a school trip during the year. Participation in the extracurricular contribution is optional, so families can choose whether their child takes part.
Each child has an allocated key person. That adult builds a relationship with the child, plans around their interests and tracks their learning, while also acting as the parent’s main contact for updates about the day. Care and communication therefore have a named role within the team, rather than leaving families to work out whom to approach.
Cucina supplies meals, and most dietary requirements can be accommodated. Breakfast is served between 7:30am and 8:30am, lunch at 11:30am and tea at 4pm; morning and afternoon snacks are also offered. These timings matter when choosing a shorter session, because different bookings cover different meals.
For funded sessions, meals and snacks are optional extras, as are nappies, wipes, nappy cream and suncream. Families who decline these extras provide their own. The setting is nut free, including food brought from home.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the Milton Keynes City Council Citizens Portal using the normal Reception application timetable.
Attendance at the on-site private nursery or pre-school does confer admissions priority, but it sits sixth in the priority order, below the preceding care, staff, catchment and sibling categories. Where children are equally eligible, distance from home to the school decides priority. Attendance is therefore one criterion, rather than a secured place.
Transition is a separate matter. Before starting school, children and parents have summer-term visits to the Foundation Stage area to meet staff, and children spend at least a morning with their new teacher. These opportunities help make the people and surroundings familiar.
Opening hours are 7:30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, throughout the year. Closures cover bank holidays, three days between Christmas and New Year and two inset days per academic year; families are not charged for those closure days.
Bookings include a full day, a morning from 7:30am to 12:30pm, an afternoon from 1pm to 6pm, and a school day from 9am to 3pm. Extra hours depend on availability. Charges are monthly, with a deposit credited against the first month’s invoice and a registration fee to reserve a place. Contact the nursery for current charges.
Up to 30 funded childcare hours are offered, subject to eligibility. Funding covers core childcare, with optional charges for food, consumables and extracurricular participation. Nursery enquiries go to bwnp@brooksward.org.uk or 01908 773971, and families are welcome to view the nursery and pre-school.
