At a Glance

Bee-Bots, messy play and specialist music give Broughton Manor’s Pre-School a distinct identity within this independent school in Milton Keynes. Practical exploration sits alongside early reading and number work. For parents, that means a day with both opportunities to choose activities and teaching aimed at the next stage.

There are distinct parts to the provision. The younger nursery cares for children from 2 months to 2½ years; Pre-School has its own classrooms and curriculum. The June 2025 ISI inspection distinguished the school’s early years from a separately registered setting for children aged 0 to 3. Its school early-years findings should therefore be read separately from the care of the youngest children.

The Nursery Day

Purposeful play drives Pre-School learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together communication, physical development, relationships, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and creative expression. In everyday terms, children practise talking, moving, counting, making things and getting along with others.

Half-termly themes provide starting points for discussion and practical activities. Role-play and messy play sit alongside phonics, number recognition, counting and activities that develop the small hand movements needed for writing. Classrooms support learning indoors and outdoors, giving children different ways to explore an idea.

Weekly sessions with specialist teachers cover Music, Drama and PE. The computing suite adds Bee-Bots and iPads, with opportunities to practise keyboard and mouse use. These are concrete changes of activity and equipment within the week.

ISI’s inspection of 10 to 12 June 2025 found that school early-years children developed confidence and progressed well through active learning. Outdoor exploration included looking for caterpillars and bugs; specialist PE teaching developed running, throwing and catching. Music activities involved singing and keeping time. Together, these examples show how movement, language and discovery contribute to learning.

Care and Support

Settling begins before the start date. Children are invited to additional visits before joining, with contact maintained with families. That gives them opportunities to become familiar with the setting before their usual attendance begins.

In June 2025, school early-years leaders worked closely with families and staff to understand children’s learning and care needs. Training on sensory needs informed classroom resources and practice, helping staff recognise and support those needs. Early-years supervision maintained suitable staffing ratios. Several staff received first-aid training; this included paediatric training for early-years staff.

Digital-device safeguards are concrete: early-years staff put their mobile phones into secure storage during the day, while parents and visitors are reminded of the device rules. Pre-School attendance includes lunch, a mid-morning snack and afternoon tea. These meals and snacks form part of the school’s standard charges.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Confirm Reception application requirements with admissions; choosing the nursery should not be treated as securing the next place.

Transition support is a separate matter. Handovers with previous key adults, settling visits and conversations about a child’s interests help the receiving team get to know the child and family. That continuity can support the move, but it does not establish an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

Pre-School operates Monday to Friday during term time. Morning attendance runs from 8.00am to 1.00pm; the five-day pattern runs from 8.00am to 5.45pm, including wraparound care. Minimum attendance in autumn and spring is five mornings or three days, increasing to four days in summer. Extra sessions depend on space, so families should choose an initial pattern they can sustain.

For eligible children aged 3 to 4, funding covers up to 30 hours over 38 weeks of attendance and is deducted from the termly invoice. Parents must obtain an eligibility code and give it, with their National Insurance Number, to the Bursar. Funding excludes meals, consumables, additional unfunded hours, specialist teaching and other activities; external clubs carry extra charges. Contact the school for current charges.

Families can arrange a tour through admissions@bmprep.co.uk or 01908 665234, or submit an enquiry form. A visit can include the nursery and grounds, making it a useful opportunity to consider the setting alongside the attendance pattern.
