Nursery at Falconhurst School

Enclosed climbing areas and sensory play give Little Falcons a physical, exploratory side to its place within Falconhurst School. This nursery for children aged three to four occupies space inside the school building in Eaglestone, Milton Keynes. Capacity is 26 children per session, with 26 morning places and 26 afternoon places, rather than 52 children attending together.
Children can start in the term following their third birthday. Families can choose shorter sessions or extended days during term time, so the provision suits both a first experience of group learning and a longer school-based day.
A morning or afternoon session lasts three hours; the extended day includes a lunchtime activity session. That changes the shape of the experience: children staying longer eat at school and can rest during the afternoon if needed, with arrangements agreed with their family.
Learning sits within the Early Years Foundation Stage. At the November 2021 inspection, the youngest children developed independence and concentration through activities adults planned around their interests and needs. The emphasis was on helping children stay absorbed in learning and do more for themselves.
The Foundation Stage outdoor space includes enclosed climbing areas alongside sensory play. These give children opportunities for movement and exploration as part of their learning environment. Beyond the classroom, children begin exploring the neighbourhood through short walks focused on surrounding sights and sounds. The school building also houses a sensory room and a room for targeted support; these are described as facilities within the school.
Settling was a strength at the November 2021 inspection: children joining nursery settled promptly, supported by relationships between staff and families. Day-to-day care also includes practical support for independence. Children are encouraged to manage toileting and handwashing themselves where they can; the intimate care policy applies when independent care is not feasible.
Fruit and a drink are offered unless a family requests otherwise, including for allergy or religious reasons. Lunch is separate from the extended offer. Children staying at lunchtime bring food from home or have a meal ordered from the school's provider. Dolce Catering supplies school meals, and nursery children eat in the Dining Hall in the first sitting. Universal Infant Free School Meals do not cover nursery children.
Afternoon rest for children on extended hours is arranged with parents, with updates through Class Dojo or a home-school link book. For additional needs, the early-years SEND policy provides for early identification and advice from specialists. Individual Learning Plans and SEND Support Plans involve parents in agreeing outcomes and reviewing support. The school's inclusion team includes a SENDCo, learning mentor and therapeutic counsellor, giving families routes to discuss learning and emotional needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Milton Keynes Council and meet the deadline for their child's entry year.
The council's admission arrangements for September 2024 explicitly gave nursery attendance no preference over other applicants. That is a dated admissions position, not an assurance about a later intake. The school also makes clear that nursery children apply alongside children from other settings. Choose Little Falcons for the nursery experience, while treating the Reception application as a separate decision.
Morning sessions run from 8.40am to 11.40am; afternoons run from 12.10pm to 3.10pm. The extended option runs from 8.40am to 3.10pm, Monday to Friday. Provision is term time only. The standard offer covers 15 funded hours, with eligible working families able to use a 30-hour code that must be revalidated every three months. Extended provision can involve charges, including lunchtime staffing; ask the school office for current charges and keep lunch costs separate in your planning.
Bookings use an application form from the school office and require written confirmation. Families request their preferred pattern, but allocation rests with the school. Changes require four weeks' notice and written agreement. Contact the office on 01908 679354 or office@falconhurstschool.co.uk.
