Play is the starting point for Germander Park’s Foundation Stage curriculum: children explore ideas, practise communicating and learn how to work alongside others. The nursery belongs to Germander Park School in Conniburrow, Milton Keynes, placing this early learning within a school setting.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 27 and 28 June 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than constituting a separate nursery rating.
The Foundation Stage curriculum brings together seven connected areas of learning through play. For parents, that means learning extends beyond letters and numbers. Talking and listening, movement, relationships and managing feelings sit alongside literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and creative expression. Children have opportunities to express ideas, explore materials and develop coordination.
The named Characteristics of Effective Learning give this approach its shape. Exploration, sustained effort and thinking through ideas are part of the curriculum, so the emphasis includes how children tackle an activity. Making connections and choosing an approach matter alongside completing it.
Mathematics includes counting and exploring shape and measurement. Creative learning encompasses role play, dance, music and art, giving children different ways to communicate their ideas. Learning about the world involves investigating their surroundings, technology and people. These are practical routes into concepts that can otherwise feel abstract to a young child.
Outdoor learning also has a named place in the school’s offer. Forest School is offered to all children throughout the year, with sessions led by a Forest School Leader at the school’s Forest School site. Activities include den building, tree climbing, using equipment and campfire cooking. Working on problems together and pursuing their own ideas give children opportunities to practise cooperation and independence outdoors.
Relationships and emotional development are explicit parts of the Foundation Stage curriculum. Children practise interacting with others, understanding feelings and participating in groups. This makes learning to get along with other children part of the educational day.
For additional needs, the school’s SEND arrangements cover communication, physical needs, emotional and mental health, and learning difficulties. Its approach includes identifying needs promptly, maintaining continuity of support and communicating with parents. Families can contact the SENDCo through the school office, providing a direct route into a discussion about support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their entry year. Choosing the nursery should therefore remain a decision about early education, with Reception admission treated as a separate process.
In June 2023, children in the school’s early years were learning everyday group routines, including putting resources away, listening on the carpet and forming a line. Those habits support preparation for the next stage of learning; they do not confer an admissions advantage.
The school office is the enquiry route: telephone 01908 674620 or email office@germanderpark.com. Germander Park School is at 1 Germander Place, Conniburrow, Milton Keynes, MK14 7DU.
