A book of the week gives Caterpillars Nursery a thread to follow: stories shape the topics, while play gives children room to take their learning in their own direction. This is Jubilee Wood Primary School’s nursery in Fishermead, Milton Keynes, with learning spread across the classroom, shared spaces and outdoors.
At the Ofsted inspection on 15 and 16 February 2022, the school’s early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection.
Play and adult guidance work together here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum combines activities children choose themselves with planned play, adult direction and work in small groups. In practical terms, children can explore an idea independently, then develop it through a conversation or an activity with an adult. The nursery aims to build curiosity and independence through this balance.
Adults use an approach called watch, wait and wonder: they observe before joining children’s activities, then ask questions to extend their thinking. Speaking and listening run through the day. Classroom activities, shared spaces and outdoor learning give children different settings in which to practise those conversations and solve problems through play.
The book of the week connects stories with language and early writing opportunities. Nursery phonics includes games involving rhymes, repeated language and similar letters throughout the year; Read Write Inc begins in the summer term. Maths activities sit within children’s ongoing play, with adults using questions to develop their understanding. Autumn walks and visits to a woodland area extend learning into the local community.
In February 2022, children in early years were learning and retaining key knowledge in English and mathematics. A wider teaching concern remained: subject expertise elsewhere in the school curriculum was less consistent, limiting achievement. This was a school-level improvement point.
Tapestry connects learning at nursery with learning at home. Staff share selected observations, including WOW moments, and parents can contribute their own examples. These exchanges help shape subsequent activities and children’s next steps, giving families a practical role in the learning rather than simply an update afterwards.
Before starting, new children are encouraged to visit the school. Additional familiarisation visits are encouraged for children with SEND, and social stories can help when a change of setting may be difficult. These are school-wide joining arrangements.
For additional needs, the early years support model includes listening to parents’ concerns, monitoring development and reviewing support through a cycle of assessment, planning, action and review. The school’s SENDCo is qualified and accredited. Magic Words provides a speech and language therapist twice a month, working with staff under the SENDCo’s direction. This is school-wide specialist support, rather than a promise of individual nursery therapy.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Milton Keynes council admissions route and follow the normal application timetable.
Attendance does confer conditional priority: children who have attended Caterpillars for at least one full term fall within the fifth oversubscription criterion. Looked-after and previously looked-after children, followed by the specified sibling and catchment categories, rank ahead of them. Where applicants share a criterion, distance determines priority, with random allocation as the final tie-breaker. Treat that priority as one factor in allocation, rather than certainty of a place.
The school office is the contact point for enquiries: telephone 01908 257810 or email office@jubileewood.milton-keynes.sch.uk. For concerns about development or additional support, parents can speak with the class teacher or SENDCo. An appointment with the SENDCo can also be arranged through the office.
