Nursery at Knowles Nursery School

Play, communication and family support give Knowles its character. This is a standalone maintained nursery school in Bletchley, rather than a nursery class within a primary school. Qualified teachers form part of the team, and Saplings Children's Centre shares the site, bringing early education and family services together.
The recorded age range is two to five. Children can start in the term following their second birthday, with government-funded and privately funded places offered. Time for Two's provides 16 places for two-year-olds in each morning and afternoon session. Children later leave for different primary schools across Milton Keynes.
Choice shapes the learning environment. Indoor and outdoor provision lets children decide where to play and what to explore, with opportunities to work alone or alongside a small group. Staff use children's interests to extend their learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework: play develops communication, problem-solving and the skills children need for their next steps.
Visual prompts, signing and sensory experiences are part of the provision. Each child has a learning journey recording significant developments, while floor books collect shared experiences and children's thinking. These give staff material to revisit with children, encouraging them to talk about their learning.
In July 2022, mixed-age key groups helped younger children gain confidence by watching older children attempt activities. A visual timetable made the session sequence understandable. Daily stories supported familiarity with books, while experiences involving chicks hatching and caterpillars becoming butterflies brought changes in nature to life. World Space Week allowed a topic to receive more sustained attention.
The July 2022 inspection identified a specific teaching weakness: some conversations stopped before staff had tested children's understanding or corrected mistaken ideas. For families, the distinction matters. Answering a question is only the beginning of helping a child understand it. Leaders had also identified attendance as an area to improve, so children could benefit fully from the curriculum.
A key person gives families a consistent relationship with the nursery team. For children aged two to three, the Two Year Progress Check includes a meeting with that person to discuss strengths and barriers to learning. Before starting, Saplings Family Centre's Stay and Play sessions offer a way to become familiar with the nursery environment.
Food fits around the session. A healthy snack is offered daily, with children choosing when to eat it. Those attending the 30-hour pattern bring their own packed lunch, so families need to plan for that longer day.
Speech and language support has a concrete place here: a therapist works with the nursery fortnightly. The SEND information page also directs families to Milton Keynes SENDIAS and referral routes for communication concerns. In July 2022, children used speech, signing or both to communicate their needs; safeguarding was effective, with staff reporting concerns promptly and maintaining detailed records.
Knowles children move to several primary schools across Milton Keynes. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Choosing this nursery is therefore a choice about early education, rather than securing a place at a particular primary school.
The standard 15-hour pattern is five mornings or five afternoons, Monday to Friday: 8:45am to 11:45am, or 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Families can express a preference, but the preferred session cannot be guaranteed.
Longer days. Eligible families with children aged two, three or four can access a limited number of 30-hour places, running from 8:45am to 2:45pm. Existing families receive priority, followed by families who have accepted a September place. Eligibility must be checked, and families must supply their National Insurance number and eligibility code. Paid longer sessions are also offered; contact the school for current charges.
