At a Glance

A mud kitchen, a reading corner and climbing apparatus give Aspiring Acorns its character: learning through stories, movement and practical play. This is Langland Community School’s own nursery, with children starting in the term after their third birthday. The nursery aims to help children become independent through exploration, with adults supporting their play.

Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 10 and 11 December 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection.

The Nursery Day

Play and adult teaching share the day. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together children’s language, physical development, relationships and feelings with early reading, mathematics, creativity and exploration of their surroundings. Children choose activities and make decisions, alongside learning directed by teachers. Indoor and outdoor spaces both form part of this approach.

Mathematics happens in practical situations: children count at circle time, divide snacks, bake and dig in the mud kitchen. Numbers have a use. The reading corner gives books a distinct space, while materials for writing are spread outdoors as well as inside. Climbing equipment comes in different sizes; games, movement to music and PE give children opportunities to practise coordination. Smaller hand movements receive attention too, as preparation for holding a pen.

Helicopter Stories adds a specific approach to storytelling. Adults capture children’s spoken stories, then a group acts them out. This gives a child’s ideas a shared audience and a role in the activity. Singing, dance and imaginative role play also feature, alongside opportunities to create artwork.

Activity planning. In December 2024, early years teaching was ambitious and activities involving English and mathematics were generally carefully designed. Some other activities lacked a sufficiently clear learning purpose, limiting what children learned. More consistent planning across the curriculum was the required improvement, a useful point for families to consider alongside the practical play offer.

Care and Support

Settling begins before the first session. Families joining the setting receive a home visit before their child starts, creating an opportunity to begin communication with the team. An Early Years Lead works across nursery and Reception, giving the nursery a link with the next stage.

Clear routines and conversations help children express feelings and manage behaviour. In early years personal and social learning, adults work with children individually, in small groups and as a whole class. Snack sharing and regular baking also bring food into the learning day.

For additional needs, the school uses an assess, plan, do, review process: identify needs, involve parents, put support into action and check its effect. Teaching approaches and pace can be adapted. Parents can contact the Inclusion Leader and SENCO through the office, providing a route for discussing their child’s needs.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no priority under the 2026–27 oversubscription criteria. Families must make a separate Reception application through their home local authority. For September 2026 entry, the deadline was midnight on 15 January 2026; that application cycle is now past.

The Early Years Lead’s work across both stages supports transition. Familiarity and continuity should be considered separately from admission: they do not change how places are allocated. Children already attending the nursery can have another home visit before starting school if their family requests one.

Practical Information

The nursery offers 15 hours of free childcare for all children, with 30 hours for those entitled to the extended provision. The distinction matters when considering how much childcare a place provides.

For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 01908 670712 or email office@langlandschool.org.uk. The school is on Langland Road in Netherfield, Milton Keynes, MK6 4HA.
