Conversation gives Moorland’s nursery its clearest character. In December 2023, adults in early years used warm exchanges, carefully chosen prompts and learning resources to help children grasp new vocabulary. Language was a deliberate teaching priority, giving children support to understand and express ideas.
The nursery belongs to Moorland Primary School on Maslin Drive in Beanhill, Milton Keynes. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 5 and 6 December 2023. That judgement covers early years together, rather than a separate nursery inspection.
Within the early years foundation stage (EYFS), communication, early reading and mathematics had a clear teaching focus in December 2023. Adults helped children understand unfamiliar words through prompts and resources, connecting conversation with learning. Reading and mathematics followed a planned sequence, and children were learning successfully across early years.
Daily story time adds a concrete feature to that language focus. Early years children have stories read to them each day, creating regular opportunities to listen and encounter words through books. For parents, this makes shared reading a useful connection between nursery learning and home.
There is also a reading concern to keep in view. In December 2023, children were starting phonics in early years, but across the school some home reading books did not fit the sounds pupils knew closely enough. Adults also needed to hear pupils read more frequently. These were school reading concerns, rather than a separate adverse nursery judgement, and matter as children begin learning to read.
The school’s staffing includes a senior nursery nurse and a nursery nurse. For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the Inclusion leader and SEND coordinator provide a route for discussing additional support. In December 2023, teaching adaptations for SEND were working well from early years onwards.
Starting arrangements for children needing SEND support involve parents, previous settings and relevant professionals. Visits can take place at home or in the child’s existing setting, alongside time at Moorland during Stepping up mornings. This allows staff to plan support before the child starts.
School SEND support can include visual timetables, extra time to process information and changes to resources. A sensory room and ear defenders are among the school’s possible supports. Provision is tailored to the child; these are options rather than a standard nursery routine. Parents involved in SEND support meet the teacher at least three times a year to agree goals and review progress.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline.
For children with SEND, preparation for a change of class includes visits to the next classroom and teacher, with staff discussing the child’s support strategies. Familiarity and information sharing help prepare the child for the change. They do not secure admission.
Moorland can be contacted on 01908 678888. Families discussing SEND support can also email SENDco@moorlandprimaryschool.co.uk. The school’s Inclusion leader and SEND coordinator are the relevant team contacts for those conversations.
