Play stretches across indoor and outdoor learning areas at Newton Leys, where a 39-place nursery forms part of the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The emphasis is on exploring, trying things out and developing confidence, rather than treating learning as a series of finished answers.
The school aims to help children tackle problems, make choices and learn both independently and with others. It also encourages them to see mistakes as part of learning. For a young child, that means the ambition includes having a go, explaining an idea and trying again.
Making and investigating give the early years curriculum concrete shape. Children choose tools and work out how to connect, assemble and shape materials, then put their ideas into practice. Designing and making opportunities are part of the daily provision. These activities give children reasons to make decisions and explain what they have done.
Adults encourage observation, exploration and problem-solving as children discover what different materials can do. The school and nursery also have access to an art and cooking room. Alongside the indoor and outdoor learning areas, this gives creative work a physical place within the setting.
EYFS is the Early Years Foundation Stage: here, its learning combines play with the beginnings of number, reading and writing. In December 2024, Ofsted found that children across the early years explored numbers and developed early literacy, with support for recognising sounds before learning words. Those are useful foundations for the next stage of learning.
Clear expectations are part of the early years experience. In December 2024, children sustained their attention to finish activities, supported by adults and established boundaries. Behaviour routines also began in the early years, giving children a consistent framework as they learned to take part in school life.
For children with additional needs, the school and nursery have a shared inclusion structure. It includes a SEND coordinator and a welfare officer, with outside agencies involved where necessary. This gives families a route into support that extends beyond the nursery team.
Parents with a concern can start with their child's class teacher. Unresolved concerns can move through the phase leader and senior leadership team. That sequence gives families a clear way to take an issue further.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Milton Keynes council coordinates school admissions, so choosing the nursery and applying for school are separate decisions.
