Nursery at Oakgrove School

Morning, afternoon or all-day attendance gives Oakgrove’s nursery three distinct ways to fit into family life. The provision serves children aged 3 and 4 at Oakgrove Primary & Nursery School on Atlas Way in Milton Keynes. It is the nursery within Oakgrove School, rather than a separate setting.
For families, the practical distinction is substantial: a morning finishes at 11.30am, while an all-day session continues until 3.30pm. The choice shapes both the child’s time here and the collection arrangements parents need to make.
Play is a vehicle for learning here. In November 2024, early-years activities helped children practise new learning through play, with knowledge and skills introduced in manageable stages. That gives young children a way to try things out while building towards the next step.
Early reading also starts within the early years, where staff teach phonics. Alongside this, children learn the language and routines that support participation and managing their behaviour. Learning how the day works matters too.
The session structure provides clear endpoints. Morning children leave at 11.30am; afternoon attendance begins with doors opening at 12.30pm and ends at 3.30pm. Collections take place at the carpet areas, giving families a specific handover point.
Confidence and familiarity with routines were early-years strengths in November 2024. Staff supported children in developing both, helping them become accustomed to expectations as well as learning activities.
Home visits and stay-and-play sessions for children entering Nursery or Reception contribute observations to the school’s process for identifying additional needs. Parents’ information contributes too. This gives staff several ways to understand a child’s development, rather than relying on classroom observations alone.
SEND support follows a cycle of assessing needs, planning changes, putting support into practice and reviewing its effect. Parents of children on the SEND register take part in discussions and scheduled reviews. Support can draw on external specialists, including speech and language therapists and educational psychologists. Both school sites have accessible toilets, entrance doors that open automatically and lifts, practical features for families with mobility needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Milton Keynes Council’s normal school admissions process and meet the deadline for their entry year.
For September 2026 Reception entry, nursery attendance conferred no priority within the oversubscription criteria. The application deadline for that cycle was 15 January 2026. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
Reception transition arrangements include home visits, stay-and-play sessions and nursery visits. These help prepare for the change of setting; they do not secure admission.
All-day and morning session doors open at 8.30am and close at 8.45am. Afternoon doors close at 12.40pm. Late arrivals use reception, and parents should notify the office promptly if collection will be delayed.
Only parents, carers or authorised adults may collect children. Families complete an authorisation form, so regular collection arrangements can be checked by staff.
