Water play, outdoor exploration and a daily dose of rhyme give Pepper Hill’s early years provision its character. This is the school’s own nursery in Bradville, Milton Keynes, with funded childcare for three- and four-year-olds. Entry follows the funding calendar, beginning in the term after a child turns three.
The practical choice is between a morning, an afternoon and a longer funded day for eligible families. That makes the attendance pattern a meaningful part of the decision: a short session and a day including lunch offer different routines.
Language takes priority in the EYFS curriculum, the framework for children’s early learning. Listening, understanding and responding sit alongside movement and social development; literacy, maths, creativity and learning about the world broaden that foundation. For a young child, this means learning to communicate and manage everyday routines as well as beginning to explore letters and numbers.
Within the school’s EYFS approach, children combine activities guided by adults with small-group work and play they choose themselves. They can move between indoor learning spaces and an outdoor area described as spacious. Sand, water and sensory activities are daily ingredients, giving children practical ways to explore materials and follow their interests.
Named activities add texture: Welly Wednesday takes learning outdoors, while Squiggle while you wiggle focuses on fine motor movement. Daily Song, Rhyme and Poem time brings language into a shared routine. These sit within the school’s early years programme rather than a timetable of nursery-only lessons.
A personalised transition and a staggered start shape the EYFS settling approach. The intention is to introduce children to their routines gradually. Learning is documented through Tapestry Online Learning Journals, and individual or small-group interventions respond to children’s needs.
Lunch is provided within the funded longer nursery day. The school has its own kitchen, preparing food with fresh ingredients each day, and sends menus through ParentMail on a three-week cycle. Its nut-aware policy asks families to keep nuts out of packed lunches.
At the June 2024 inspection, Ofsted identified expectations for learning and behaviour through the PROUD values beginning in Nursery. Those expectations give children a consistent starting point for learning alongside others.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Pepper Hill directs applicants to the Milton Keynes Council primary admissions form on the local authority website; nursery enrolment should therefore be treated as its own decision.
